Should I put sunscreen on my dog's bald spot from a skin condition?

Hi, the areas that need to be protected are those uncovered or just partially covered by fur and routinely exposed to the sun, so I would include the tip of the ears and areas above the eyes in certain breeds, as well as nose and paws.

Excessive sun exposure can certainly be damaging to the cells in the skin in both humans and animals. Dogs can be predisposed to melanoma, hemangiomas and certain auto-immune disorders of the skin. It is recommended to use sunscreen lotion / spray that is intended for use in animals that will be in excessive amounts of sun. Epi Pet has a product for sun protection that is a lotion which can be applied to the areas of the animal where there is less hair (nose, abdomen, etc.). I hope this helps! Hello. Yes, dogs can absolutely get sunburned. Make sure you keep Cassie out of the direct sun until some hair grows in over the next several weeks, or you can put a small light t shirt on her. If she is not painful or uncomfortable where the skin is pink, then it is not a bad burn & there is nothing you really need to do. If she is painful or seems uncomfortable, ask your veterinarian about some pain medication for a couple of days. The biggest point is just make sure she does not burn further by protecting her skin. It’s uncommon for older dogs to get ringworm, and when they do it’s generally on the face. This area may have started to itch and she got it red and irritated from licking. I would clean the area with a medicated shampoo that kills both bacteria and yeast. Then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. In addition use a cone if she’s licking the area. If you wash your hands well after touching her you shouldn’t get anything. If it’s not healing or there are other areas then please take her in for an exam and skin tests to determine if it’s ringworm or infection. As long as Shadow's skin changes are not causing her discomfort, redness, scabbing or overall irritation, they look like a normal pigment variation in the picture. Dogs can get sunburnt from laying in the sun, just like people. If she spends excessive time in the sun, consider a pet sunscreen ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=26838 ), but try to avoid letting Shadow lick it off. If it is a light colored like white or tan and has a pink pigment on the nose and the hair is thinner this is a good idea. Watch the ears also as they can be a problem if white haired also. Just be careful to get a safe dog version or a human one that does NOt contain zinc oxide as this can be hazardous if large amounts are swallowed
