My dog has red skin after a haircut. Is it sunburn? What should I do?

As long as Shadow's skin changes are not causing her discomfort, redness, scabbing or overall irritation, they look like a normal pigment variation in the picture. Dogs can get sunburnt from laying in the sun, just like people. I am sorry to hear about Cassie. It looks like this could be a reaction to an insect bite or a small spot of infection we can sometimes see as a result of allergies. I would recommend cleaning the area with a mild soap and applying a topical antibiotic such as neosporin on the area 2-3 time a day. If the lesions are not improving in a few days, new lesions are developing, or the area is looking worse then I would recommend an examination by your veterinarian.

Excessive sun exposure can certainly be damaging to the cells in the skin in both humans and animals. Dogs can be predisposed to melanoma, hemangiomas and certain auto-immune disorders of the skin. It is recommended to use sunscreen lotion / spray that is intended for use in animals that will be in excessive amounts of sun. Epi Pet has a product for sun protection that is a lotion which can be applied to the areas of the animal where there is less hair (nose, abdomen, etc.). I hope this helps! First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). It sounds like Nesca has some clipper burn from having her fur shaved. You can give Nesca an oatmeal bath that will help with the irritation from the clipper rash. Do not put any topical antibiotic ointment on it unless prescribed by the vet. That's because cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. You can give you vet a call to let them know Nesca has some clipper burn, and they can recommend a safe treatment for her.
