My 5-year-old chorkie suddenly can't see. Is he going blind?

This is an emergency. Your dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. Sudden loss of eye sight can be caused by many conditions, inherited/congenital eye disease, tick borne disease (Ehrlichiosis), diseases of the retina, SARDS (usually in older dogs), Inflammatory, autoimmune, or allergic causes and many more. Please take Buddy to a veterinarian now.

This is a serious concern and you should take Gunner to a vet ASAP. He may have an infection, tick borne disease such as ehrlichiosis (I have seen sudden blindness caused by Ehrlichia canis) or a problem with blood pressure or ocular pressure. Blood work and a thorough veterinary exam should reveal the cause and then timely treatment can be initiated depending on the diagnosis,

Poor Hank! It could be he has a serious eye infection leading to this cloudiness, squinting, and trouble seeing. He could have also injured his eye. It's very concerning this just happened overnight, and any problem with the eye should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Pictures can be deceiving but it looks like she may have developed cataracts and i recommend a full vet check as soon as possible to rule out medical causes such as diabetes and other hormonal conditions. Surgical removal is often possible to restore vision

Six years old is not old for a Shih Tzu, and while a dog's vision can decrease with age, it's not normal to go completely blind at this age. I would be concerned there is something medical causing his loss of sight such as glaucoma, and the only solution for this is to have him seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing him to lose his sight, and can discuss with you if there is a treatment for it to return his sight. I'd take him into a vet today. Best of luck.

That’s very sad. Sudden blindness can be from high blood pressure causing retinal detachment or diabetic cataracts. She may have had a heart or lung condition that prevented her from getting enough air and chest expansion to bark. Dogs do die from congestive heart failure, complications from heartworm disease and other heart problems. Unfortunately neither of the symptoms you describe are specific enough to know why she died. I’m sorry for your loss. In the future you can request an autopsy by your veterinarian if an animal dies and you want to know the reason.
