Why is my dog struggling to drink, mouth open, bowl full of saliva?

It’s possible he has pain in his neck. This can be from a compressed or calcified disc or an infection in the vertebra. I recommend to have him examined again by the veterinarian with deep palpation of the neck. He may need a radiograph as well. If a lesion is discovered, he will start medication and likely pain management. I hope this helps.

There are a number of different things that could cause problems with closing the mouth and excessive drooling like this, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine her. Some common possibilities would include an injury to the mouth or jaw, a tumor or infection in the mouth, or a neurologic problem such as a stroke. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet for an exam today, if possible, since some of these problems can be quite serious. Your vet can do a complete neurologic exam and may also sedate her so that a thorough oral exam can be performed as well. Once a diagnosis is made, he/she can talk to you about what treatment will be needed.

Poor Thor! I am concerned that he could have a problem with the nerve that innervates his tongue or he could have something like masticatory myositis which affects the muscles of the jaw. Usually with masticatory myositis, the dog will be painful when the mouth is fully opened. If the antibiotics and steroids do not help than consider taking him to a veterinary neurologist or internal medicine specialists for a work up and treatment. If he is not able to drink than your vet can give him subcutaneous fluids to help keep him hydrated.Hope he feels better soon!

Usually when a dog can only stick his tongue to one side it's either a structural problem of the mouth cavity or a neurological problem (in the brain), i would recommend taking him to the vet in order to have this issue checked, i'm not sure there will be a solution for this problem though.

She should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She could have an infection, neurological disease, toxic exposure, liver/kidney disease, endocrine disease, etc. Your vet can do a physical examination and run lab-work to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat the problem.

Based on the clinical signs and the pictures you have provided, I think a trigeminal neuropathy is a distinct possibility. I don't agree with the assessment of the x-rays that there is any cervical disk compression, but that also be due to the fact that I am not viewing the radiographs as they are meant to be viewed. I cannot unfortunately zoom in or alter the contrast of the images. The one thing that does not add up with the diagnosis would be the pain associated with the movement. Traditionally, we do not see any extensive pain with this condition. Other possible causes of the the symptoms you are seeing are some sort of dental disease, primary nerve tumor, or other neuropathy of the face / head.

I agree that is quite bizarre. You may try raising her food and water bowl off the ground to more her level to see if that helps. If not, it wouldn’t hurt to have your vet just take a peak at her to ensure she isn’t stiff or uncomfortable anywhere since this is a new behavior. I hope to resolves the problem!
