Why is my dog drooling, mouth open, and in pain when drinking?

It’s possible he has pain in his neck. This can be from a compressed or calcified disc or an infection in the vertebra. I recommend to have him examined again by the veterinarian with deep palpation of the neck. He may need a radiograph as well. If a lesion is discovered, he will start medication and likely pain management. I hope this helps.

Poor Thor! I am concerned that he could have a problem with the nerve that innervates his tongue or he could have something like masticatory myositis which affects the muscles of the jaw. Usually with masticatory myositis, the dog will be painful when the mouth is fully opened. If the antibiotics and steroids do not help than consider taking him to a veterinary neurologist or internal medicine specialists for a work up and treatment. If he is not able to drink than your vet can give him subcutaneous fluids to help keep him hydrated.Hope he feels better soon!

An immediate check up is required as these signs seems to be compatible with a neurological problem. Intervertebral disc extrusion/protrusion in the cervical area can cause commonly nerve/spinal cord and meninges (around spinal cord) compression. The compression may be dynamic, showing up signs when moving the neck in certain postures. X rays and more specific and advanced imaging procedures may be needed. This sounds like a serious problem, especially given the chronicity. A neurologic problem with the nerves to the face or a neuromuscular problem (facial muscles) may be options. Unfortunately there are many things that could be causing these symptoms. A good place to start is baseline bloodwork to check organ function along with a full neurologic exam by a vet. If your family vet is stumped then referral to a veterinary specialist (internist or neurologist) is indicated. More testing is needed in a case like this in order to know what is the best treatment. Poor Baby! It sounds like he may be suffering from some neck pain. This could progress causing neurological problems if left untreated. I would have your vet take a look at him to localize the pain and to ensure nothing else is going on. Your vet will be able to do x-rays if needed. In the meantime, I would keep him confined and do not let him jump, run or play until you can get in to see your vet. I would not give him any human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs. With signs of muscle weakness, I would definitely have her tested for a condition called Myasthenia Gravis. This is an immune mediated disorder that can cause a multitude of symptoms including facial weakness, regurgitation, neck weakness and exercise intolerance. It can be tested through your vet and also treated for. The only other possible cause that comes to mind for a pet with muscle weakness and a tight jaw, would be tetanus, but you would expect a multitude of other symptoms including vomiting, fever, severe lethargy and inappetence. I hope that they can find out the cause soon! If she still comes up negative for anything after the additional test, then I would consider an MRI or CT scan on Xena moving forward. If rabies is a concern humans should not be touching his saliva or be in a position where they could be bitten. It sounds like Jordan may have trigeminal neuritis (inflamed nerve). The cause is unknown but I have seen it after vaccination. The most effective treatment is supportive care. Jordan will need assistance with eating and drinking. If you are able to provide sufficient care at home, he may be treated as an outpatient, but if you cannot care for him, it will need supportive nutritional care in the veterinary hospital so that it is receiving adequate nutrients. If Jordan is still able to lap and swallow food that is offered, you can use a large syringe that is placed in the corner of the mouth to feed him water and pureed foods, with Jordan's head slightly elevated so that it can swallow easily. This disease usually spontaneously resolves after 2-4 weeks. I hope this helps and I wish Jordan a speedy recovery!
