Can my dog catch strep throat from me? What pet parents should know.

I think your concern is warranted as you don't want the new puppy to get sick. In general, pets are considered not contagious if they haven't been coughing for a week. Or once they start antibiotics, generally they will not be contagious (assuming they respond well as expected) within a week into therapy. These are generalized assumptions but keep in mind, every pet is different. Personally, I would want the antibiotic on board for 10 days AND no coughing for 10 days before I would bring home a puppy. I would also clean the house really well including washing all dogs beds/blankets, vacuuming and mopping to decrease bacteria and viruses in the environment. If possible, have the breeder go ahead and give the Bordetella vaccine (ideally a week or longer ) before the new puppy is due to arrive at your house. It is possible, but extremely rare that strep is passed from humans to cats. A cat that is very old, very young or immune compromised is more susceptible than a healthy adult cat. Antibiotics would be used in treatment after diagnosis by a veterinarian.

As a matter of fact, there are only about 1-2 rare forms of strep bacterial infections that dogs can get from people, and in those cases it’s usually an upper respiratory infection. Poor doggy. No mycoplasma is not contagious to other pets or people. Mycoplasma is transmitted through a flea bite and pets can be affected. This is not considered to be a zoonotic (contagious to people) disease although there was 1 reported case of a person getting infected after being scratched by a cat. But in general no it isn't easily transmissible to people. So essentially a flea that is infected will infect any other pets that are not protected by a monthly flea preventative. Hello, thank you for your question about Luna. Yes, dogs do carry other diseases/organisms that can be transmitted to humans. Some intestinal parasites that dogs are susceptible too can also lead to sickness in humans. Additionally, other infectious organisms such as leptospirosis can be transmitted to humans. There are other contagious conditions, but the above mentioned are some of the more common. It is always key to practice good hygeine and hand washing while around animals to prevent transmission of any organisms. How lovely of you to look after Hiccup! It could be possible that he has a respiratory infection. These can be caused by viruses and bacteria. While the viruses are not contagious, it is possible a bacterial infection could be to your dogs. I would keep Hiccup isolated from the dogs to be safe.

However, if we're not sure about the diagnosis, I will just say that there are a couple (uncommon) infectious diseases that can cause large lymph nodes. And these diseases CAN be contagious sometimes. Talk to your vet if you have concerns but my guess is that your maltipoo will be perfectly safe interacting with Brandy. Best wishes to you all.
