How to train my dog to stop chasing the cat and come when called?

Hi there. I would recommend keeping him on-leash in the house for now, and keeping some tasty treats handy. Every time he sees one of the cats, praise and give him a treat. Before long, he will start to look expectantly at you for his treat whenever he sees the cats, instead of trying to chase them. Once that happens, you can start to allow some off-leash freedom in the house as long as he's doing well. Training training and again training is the answer to your question!! Start with simple commands everyday, for 10-15 minutes. Yes rough play can be definitively dangerous for your cat (or for Jack!!) and I would monitor them very closely or even try to keep them separated until Jack is not disciplined enough.. Some dogs have a very high prey drive, and it may be that the cats running away trigger this instinct in her, even if she doesn't hurt them. Working on desensitizing her to the stimulus (cats) through training techniques such as BAT (Behavioral Adjustment Training) may help her start to ignore them. Usually this works by starting from a point far enough away that she doesn't react, and gradually moving closer to the target while redirecting her behaviors. Redirection with toys and appropriate treats can also help. At home, making sure to have baby gates up and places your cats can get to up high that your dog cannot can help ensure they have a place to relax and observe without being constantly bothered by Nova. Redirecting her behavior to something else when she gets too focused on the cat, either by practicing some training in a different room, going outside, etc can help. You also don't want to let the kitten and Nova be unattended together as even the nicest dog can accidentally hurt a smaller cat in play.

Hi there. I'm sorry to tell you this but Huskies are notorious for killing cats. It is unfortunately in their nature to chase and kill things that run from them....... This is going to be VERY difficult. If Villian did not run from him there may be a chance of getting some resolution but if Villain is scared (which is understandable) and he runs, the higher the chance your dog will eventually catch and kill him. I'm not trying to freak you out but I want you to be realistic. They are not a breed known to be good with cats or even small dogs. Of course there are some that are fine but if you have to play the odds.......most are not. That being said I feel like your only real shot is to have a dog trainer come to your house, assess the situation with all the family members and pets and then hopefully they can help you try to modify your dog's behavior and response to the cat. I will tell you, instinct is a hard thing to overcome. I recommend you try BarkBusters. They are really good. Sadly, this is nearly impossible to train away. It's a situation where nature trumps nurture. If you want to try, I'd recommend working with her instead of sit, laydown, and watch me commands. Once she's amazing at them inside, take her to an indoor public place to get good there, then an outdoor place with no animals, and then out in to the general world. Once she's really really solid with those basic commands you can use them to try to get her attention before she sees the chicken or cat. In the mean time, don't let her practice this behavior (ie keep her on leash at all times and calmly but quickly remove her from the chickens or cats if she starts to go crazy). For now, I would recommend keeping Marge on-leash whenever the dogs are together - this way, you can prevent her from chasing him, and can also reward her for remaining calm when he is around. When you aren't able to do this, it would be best to keep them separated to prevent any problems. As Marge gets older, this problem should improves as she settles down a bit.
