Dog whining, running, downward dog pose: Is it stomach or hip pain?

Prolonged bowing / prayer poses is typically an indicator of abdominal pain in dogs / cats. The pain can be stemming from a primary gastrointestinal issue or from an organ system like the kidneys, pancreas or liver. Diagnostic blood work and / or radiographs are typically needed in order to best rule in / rule out certain possibilities and plan for the best therapeutic approach. Hope this makes sense.

If your dog is lying in the "prayer position" - front end down and rear end up - while acting uncomfortable, it's usually a sign of abdominal pain. It sounds like your pup isn't feeling well for some reason. You can try offering her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for today to help settle her stomach. If this doesn't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, not wanting to eat, or acting lethargic, then I would recommend having her examined by a vet as these can be signs of a serious GI problem such as pancreatitis.

In my experience, dogs don't tend to change positions in order to obtain more comfort when they have pancreatitis (unlike people who definitely do this). When dogs are in pain, they simply tend to lay on whatever side of their body that causes them the least amount of discomfort. If you have any reason to believe that Milo could currently have pancreatitis, I would encourage you to have him checked out by a veterinarian, and to have blood drawn and an ultrasound performed. This position can be a sign of a stomach ache or abdominal pain. This can be from many things including constipation, an intestinal blockage, stomach ulcer etc. please monitor if she’s eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally. If not then please bring her in for an exam. They will check her over to see if they can find the reason for these symptoms, and may recommend abdominal X-rays and lab tests. A dog with abdominal pain may walk with the back hunched or may posture in a "play bow" (front legs on floor, back end in the air). Lethargy, decreased appetite and rapid breathing may also indicate some degree of pain, abdominal or other.

Hello, unfortunately these may present very similar to one another. Back pain may begin with a very guarded walk and unwillingness to jump or go up on stairs. They may also have referred abdominal pain. Stomach pain may also cause pets not to move much and will likely make them have a poor appetite and even vomiting. You may see an arched back or a "praying position" stance. You may see similar signs with kidney pain, however, you are more likely to see increased drinking, decreased urinations, and severe lethargy. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Aw, poor Honey. That posture indicates that her stomach is bothering her. A few things that can cause this are intestinal foreign body, gastritis, and bloat. If she's unable/unwilling to eat and rest, is vomiting, is very lethargic, or her gums look pale she needs to go to an emergency clinic right away (tonight). If she's otherwise totally normal (eating, resting a normal amount, playful, no vomiting or dry heaving, no diarrhea), you can probably wait until the morning, although going to the emergency clinic for an exam and abdominal x-rays would still be the safest choice.
