My dog keeps doing a prayer pose. Is it a sign of stomach pain?

If your dog is lying in the "prayer position" - front end down and rear end up - while acting uncomfortable, it's usually a sign of abdominal pain. It sounds like your pup isn't feeling well for some reason. You can try offering her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for today to help settle her stomach. If this doesn't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, not wanting to eat, or acting lethargic, then I would recommend having her examined by a vet as these can be signs of a serious GI problem such as pancreatitis.

I am sorry to hear about Kira. Going down on her front legs with her bottom up in the air is most often a sign of abdominal pain and can be a cause for concern. You may be able to tell that her belly is bothering her if by pressing on the abdomen. If she continues this behavior it would be reason to seek veterinary care ASAP. It can be a sign of pancreatitis, a twisting of the stomach or intestines, an intestinal blockage, severe stomach ulcer, and more. If this behavior continues or she begins to vomit or retch, or becomes weak or pale, or begins breathing heavily I would recommend taking her in to the emergency vet.

A dog with abdominal pain may walk with the back hunched or may posture in a "play bow" (front legs on floor, back end in the air). Lethargy, decreased appetite and rapid breathing may also indicate some degree of pain, abdominal or other.

In my experience, dogs don't tend to change positions in order to obtain more comfort when they have pancreatitis (unlike people who definitely do this). When dogs are in pain, they simply tend to lay on whatever side of their body that causes them the least amount of discomfort. If you have any reason to believe that Milo could currently have pancreatitis, I would encourage you to have him checked out by a veterinarian, and to have blood drawn and an ultrasound performed. This is actually a sign of abdominal pain. Common causes are pancreatitis, gall bladder disease and intestinal disease. The incident with the couch appears to be a separate issue and not serious if he is waling fine. It's best to have Toby seen by a vet sometime soon, so the specific problem can be identified. This position can be a sign of a stomach ache or abdominal pain. This can be from many things including constipation, an intestinal blockage, stomach ulcer etc. please monitor if she’s eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally. If not then please bring her in for an exam. They will check her over to see if they can find the reason for these symptoms, and may recommend abdominal X-rays and lab tests. Hello, unfortunately these may present very similar to one another. Back pain may begin with a very guarded walk and unwillingness to jump or go up on stairs. They may also have referred abdominal pain. Stomach pain may also cause pets not to move much and will likely make them have a poor appetite and even vomiting. You may see an arched back or a "praying position" stance. You may see similar signs with kidney pain, however, you are more likely to see increased drinking, decreased urinations, and severe lethargy. Hope this helps and best of luck.
