Why is my dog staggering and walking into things? Is it poison?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 65 lbs

My dog is staggering and walking into things. Not sure of age....8? 10? It's been going on for 5 days. Does this sound like poison?

Hi there and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. While staggering and walking into things may be a sign of toxicity, it may also be contributed to other causes: neurological dysfunction, cardiopulmonary issues, dementia, or vision impairment. It is very hard to tell sight unseen without examining Mugsy to say for sure what is causing his symptoms, however I would strongly encourage you to visit your veterinarian as soon as possible for a full work up.
