My dog suddenly can't walk straight. Should I take him to the vet?

There are plenty of possibilities that could be causing this including neurological disease or orthopedic disease. This could certainly be related to him being in those conditions for a long time or perhaps is unrelated. This could even be due to weakness from dehydration or malnutrition. However, I do think that this warrants a veterinary evaluation as soon as possible to try to determine what may be going on. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. What you are describing sounds like "ataxia," which may be due to a variety of reasons, including an inner ear infection, a neurologic issue, an underlying medical issue (such as low blood sugar), or another underlying issue. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine what may be going on, and if any further diagnostics or treatment is needed. Good luck!

The symptoms you have described can be the result of an intoxication, orthopedic pain such as arthritis or a neurological problem. I would go ahead and have him evaluated at this time to see more in detail what he may have and see what the treatment would be like. I am hoping for the best!

I always recommend having abnormal gaits evaluated by a veterinarian. If there is anything neurologic or orthopedic (bones and joints) going on, it is better to catch it early. Eli is still growing at 15 months, so there are a number of things that could be going on. I would recommend taking a couple of videos of him walking, so you can show them to your veterinarian during his examination.
