My dog was sprayed with a chemical, eyes shut. What should I do?

I'm sorry Spot is so uncomfortable. I assume you meant she was sprayed by a skunk? She should see a veterinarian to make sure there is no ulceration or damage to the eyes, but in the meantime you can flush the eyes with an isotonic eye saline rinse that you can purchase at almost any over the counter pharmacy. Also cool water compresses applied to the closed eyes may make her more comfortable. I hope this helps!

There should be no ill effects apart from the smell :) The only problems we will usually see from skunk spraying is irritation of the eyes if they get sprayed in the eyes - so if you notice any squinting of the eyes you should wash them out through this eye wash and/or eye gel. That sounds like Dodsie may have burned her eyes. This is likely painful and requires treatment. I recommend to have her seen today by a veterinarian. The doctor will need to stain her eyes to look for burns on the cornea. Medications will depend up the exam findings and stain results. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jergive! How old is he and what kind of dog? I would rinse him again and bathe him again in Dawn dish soap. I wonder if he got a lot of the baking soda in his mouth. Baking soda can be toxic in dogs, especially if small. Vomiting is the first sign of a intoxication. Rinse his mouth out. If he is young and small then he could be very tired from the bathe or just not feel well after the vomiting. If he doesn't start opening his eye and becoming active in an hour should be taken to a vet. I wish you the best!

Getting sprayed in the eyes by a skunk is akin to getting sprayed in the eyes with tear gas. This requires immediately veterinary care. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. If they are crusted over with some kind of dried discharge, a warm moist washcloth will help soften it and dissolve. Don't force the eyes to open and don't pick at the eyes or lashes, let the warm water do the work. To determine the cause and get it treated, you should get your dog in to see your veterinarian as soon as possible. There could be damage to the corneas that will need aggressive treatment, at the very least your dog needs ointment or drops to soothe his/her eyes and help them heal.
