My dog's nail split and she's limping. Is it a quick injury? What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 61 lbs

my dog has split her nail and it looks like its attached to a nerve and it's causing her to limp or walk on 3 legs. i have attached 3 photos of her nail down below. what should i do?

Hello. The nail has indeed split & what you are seeing is the fleshy quick of the nail. My remedy is to snip off the hanging part of the nail & bandage the foot for a few days to protect the sensitive quick until it begins to heal. He needs to have the broken nail trimmed back. Every time he puts pressure on the toe it hits the exposed nerve. I would try to fine someone with dog nail clippers to cut the nail back. You can see if a groomer can do it. If your Vet is closed you may have to take him to an Emergency hospital to have them cut it. It needs to be cut all the way back to where the break ends and the entire width (top to bottom). The nail will bleed and need to be bandaged if it can't be stopped with Kwik stop. You can try putting a sock on it or bandaging the foot until monday.

My dog has a painful split nail and is limping. What should I do?

Hi, I think the old nail should be removed. It would also be great if we could prevent Marley from licking the area as this can cause inflammation and infection. I know this is tricky given Marley’s breed ! Another thing you could do is bathe Marley’s paw in diluted Chlorexidine twice a day, dilution is normally 1:10 (i.e. one part of chlorexidine to 10 of water ) but even to make a very diluted pink solution will do and dry up with a clean cotton cloth afterwards. My dog's nail quick is exposed and he's limping. Vet visit needed?

Poor Russell. He definitely avulsed his nail. The remaining quick should not be removed and as long as it is not bleeding, it should not pose too much risk. The unfortunate thing is that these are very uncomfortable and can lead to limping as the quick contains lots of sensitive nerves. I would limit his activity for several days and do not allow him to lick it. It will slowly start to dry out and the nail may regrow. There's potential that the nail may not grow normally and will require more frequent cutting.

My dog's nail broke at the base and is bleeding. What should I do?

Hello. This is such a common injury in dogs. Veterinarians deal with this by cutting the nail at the break & then applying an antibiotic cream mixed with a little lidocaine to stop the pain. The foot stays bandaged for a couple of days until the sensitive tissue starts to heal. From here, the nail will begin to grow out & Jack will be back to his old self. My dog's nail bled, still limping after 3 days. Should I see a vet?

Please don't give any over-the-counter pain medications; they can be toxic to dogs at even low doses and giving them will confound your vet's ability to treat the pain with appropriate medications. The reality is that most of these nail injuries end up getting infected, and even if there's no infection they are exquisitely painful. You can compare it to losing your fingernail completely, but then having to walk on the uncovered cuticle. Patch likely needs to have the area numbed and the remaining nail pulled, then have a very soft/cushioning bandage placed, followed by antibiotics and pain medication. Please take him in to see his vet as soon as you can for this.

My dog has a cracked nail, is limping, and won't let me touch it. Help!

I recommend booking an appointment with a veterinarian to have Lexie’s nail evaluated, as it is likely causing her pain, as indicated by the limping. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to your pup without consulting with your vet. Your veterinarian can prescribe safe medication to help with the pain, and can clean and treat the injury to help reduce the risk of infection. In the meantime, I recommend putting an e-collar (cone) on Lexie to help prevent her from licking her paw an reduce the risk of infection. I hope Lexie feels better soon!

My dog's nail quick is separated from her toe, what's the next step?

Hello. If Rosie is at all uncomfortable on the foot, constantly licking the toe, or unwilling to walk on the leg, she probably should see her veterinarian tomorrow. The toe needs to be protected, possibly with an antibiotic soaked wrap until the quick dies a bit. It will take a couple of weeks for a new nail to grow out, but if the sensitive quick can be protected, she will be much more comfortable.
