My dog had spleen surgery. Are muscle spasms from pain or exertion?

He needs to rest. You can use a sling or towel under his belly to help him stand to go potty and take short walks in the yard. Many dogs with neurological injuries will have muscle spasms and that can cause the knotting up that you are seeing. Your veterinarian will do an exam and prescribe medication for pain and often a muscle relaxant also. Will time he should improve as you are already seeing some positive changes. It's hard to say what could be causing this without examining Maxx. It could be caused by pain, internal medical disease (such as liver disease), electrolyte abnormalities, neuromuscular disorder, etc. If it doesn't appear to be getting worse and Maxx is otherwise normal, then it can probably wait to see the vet. If it does get worse, bothers Maxx, or if additional symptoms develop, he should see a vet during your travels.

Hello. Muscle spasms do happen in dogs. Perhaps you were seeing a diaphragmatic spasm, similar to a hiccup, or Ti-Ti was having some digestive issues. If her belly seems soft now, & her appetite & activity level are normal, then most likely whatever was bothering her has passed. As a veterinarian who specializes in cancer and sees a lot of splenic tumors on a regular basis, I can tell you that this could have happened as a result of an arrhythmia as some of these tumors that affect the spleen such as hemangiosarcoma can result in arrhythmias or a result of a splenic mass rupture causing significant internal bleeding. So sorry for your loss.

It certainly could be a pulled muscle, however usually we don't see those occurring with just normal activity. Confine him to a small space, and take him outside only on a leash and only for potty breaks for 2 - 3 days. Keep him quiet, and if he improves, then it probably was a mild injury like a strain. If not, he'll need to see his vet to determine exactly what happened, and how to treat it.

It's possible she has injured her back. many times there will not be any signs on a physical exam until the injury happens. Certainly an injury to the joints of the leg are also possible. I recommend to try to get her examined as soon as you can. A back injury can become chronic and serious in nature (just like humans). Be up front with the doctor about your cost concerns. Until you have her examined, she needs exercise restriction so NO running, jumping, going for walks, stairs or getting on the furniture. It is difficult to know how concerning this is. The main concern would be pain causing him to tense up the way he did. Pain can come in the form of a pinched nerve, a bad back or a compressed disc. Less common sources of pain would be pancreatic or intestinal pain. Is there a potential that he had a seizure? I recommend to play it safe and have him examined by his veterinarian.
