My dog screamed, fell, and has an arched back. Is it a pulled muscle?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My 2 year old toy aussie who has been very active and in good health had quite an episode today. Going out to potty this morning everything seemed just fine. Happy and playful. While trotti g back the thw house he let out a crazy scream of pain and hit the ground. I rushed up to him, and got bit trying to comfort him which tells me the pain was extreme. He slowly stood up, showing very brief lameness in a rear leg. Now hes moving around fine but has his back slightly arched. Pulled muscle or bad

It certainly could be a pulled muscle, however usually we don't see those occurring with just normal activity. Confine him to a small space, and take him outside only on a leash and only for potty breaks for 2 - 3 days. Keep him quiet, and if he improves, then it probably was a mild injury like a strain. If not, he'll need to see his vet to determine exactly what happened, and how to treat it.
