My dog is on pyometra antibiotics. Is bleeding normal on day 6?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Assie! Where is she bleeding from? Her vulva? Bleeding and purulent discharge from the vulva is common in an open pyometra, that means the infection is draining though an open cervix. The draining doesn't indicate that she is improving or will get better it just means that the cervix is open. There are 2 types of pyometras: 1) open and 2) closed. Closed are very serious because the uterus can get very big and rupture. I highly recommend having Assie spayed. Pyometras are life threatening. If you are not planning on breeding her I would proceed with removing her uterus. I would contact your Vet when they open and discuss the discharge and bleeding and see if they want to change their course of action. I hope this helps and I wish Assie the very best!

I think she should be rechecked. It sounds like she had an open pyometra or uterine infection. While the discharge could still be normal it's also possible that she needs antibiotics for a bit longer. Sometimes the injections and antibiotics do not completely clear the infection and surgery is necessary.

I am assuming she is on an antibiotic. if not, then your vet should start her on an antibiotic. If she is on an antibiotic then you should call your vet as he/she may want to change antibiotics. After 4 days, I would expect any discharge to be decreasing.

No, that is not normal. She should be put on broad spectrum antibiotics. There may be an infection in the uterine tissue that is remaining in the abdomen (stump pyometra). A second surgery may be needed to remove the infective tissue. The bloodwork shows a high white blood cell count indicating infection. Some of her liver enzymes are mildly elevated but I don't think they are significant at this time. She needs to be evaluated for a stump pyometra. Most of the dogs will improve within 24hrs from starting the antibiotics. However, pyometra is a serious, debilitating disease and many dogs will not get back to normal (despite antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications) until they get spayed. If Ella has been on antibiotics for longer than 48hrs and she has not made any improvement, you should get her checked by your local vets again.

Poor girl. Yes it can be normal for pets to still have blood in their urine unfortunately for up to 48 to 72 hours after taking antibiotics. However you should see improvement with the blood every day and your pet should still be active alert and relatively stable otherwise.

First off, I'm so sorry that Piper had complications during her surgery! Complications can happen, and if the bowels needed to be relocated to find the bleed, it does make sense to put her on a course of antibiotics to be safe. If her bowels were perforated, the vet would have told you about that complication, so it's more than likely she was prescribed the antibiotics as a precautionary measure. I'd be careful comparing how humans and dogs are dose in medications because dogs require different doses of drugs and may be given them for longer durations.
