Is construction dust on my clothes harmful if my dog sniffs it?

Hi, from your description if the events I also think your dog should be fine. However I would keep an eye on him over the next 8-12 hours, make sure he is eating, drinking and not having any different symptoms when breathing.

He will likely be fine as the exposure was minimal and you decontaminate him soon after. Monitor for excessive drooling, vomiting or muscle weakness. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. As long as he continues to behave normally though, he should be fine.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Asbestos is dangerous to dogs as much as for human. Chronic exposure can lead to development of a malignant tumor. However, a single exposure to one piece of asbestos will not be harmful and your Bailey will be fine.

Most chemicals include warnings against breathing in the fumes, even inadvertently, as they typically recommend that they are only used in well-ventilated areas. If you can smell the fumes from these chemicals in your laundry room, it's likely that Timo is also breathing them in. Different chemicals can cause different toxicities, but most/all can cause some problems, particularly if they are inhaled on a regular basis. As long as you are certain that Timo could not have ingested or touched any of the chemicals, is eating, drinking and acting normally, without any coughing or breathing concerns, you shouldn't need to seek out emergency veterinary care at this time. (Obviously, if he is doing any of those things, emergency veterinary care is needed urgently!) Otherwise, be sure to remove these chemicals from the laundry room so that they are stored in an area where no one (Timo or a person) can breathe in these fumes.

Hello. There was a paper published in Environmental International in 2002 on the validity of detection of microbial growth in buildings by trained dogs. It concluded that the use of trained dogs to detect mold or decay damage appears to have high specificity & high predictive value, but low sensitivity. As to the health of the dog, I would not expect this to be particularly worrisome because the dog generally will be with a handler ( you ) & a dog should be able to pick up the essence of any decay without actually inhaling spores. Now I understand that in some instances, you would probably be wearing a respirator, but a dog should be able to pick up on a scent so quickly that exposure should be minimal. And I believe that as long as the mold is not disturbed, spores should not become significantly airborn. I would equate this job to search & rescue dogs that go in after a disaster & breathe in all kinds of fumes, dust & particulate material ( think about the dog's that went in after 9/11 or dog's searching rubble after earthquakes ). Similar to humans, fumes can be irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. If the ventilation was appropriate enough that you were comfortable then likely your dog was too. If you were wearing a mask then your dog probably should not be in that area. Watch for any coughing or difficulty breathing.
