My dog was near construction. Is he safe from paint exposure?

That shouldn't be a problem. Construction dust is usually just that, dust. Any toxic materials used in construction and renovation are usually regulated very closely when there is the potential for people or animals to come into contact with it. Keep an eye on him to be safe, but he seems fine, he probably is.

Similar to humans, fumes can be irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. If the ventilation was appropriate enough that you were comfortable then likely your dog was too. If you were wearing a mask then your dog probably should not be in that area. Watch for any coughing or difficulty breathing. Hi there! I am sorry to hear about Soda Pop's troubles. He very well could be sensitive to the paint fumes in the apartment below you as dogs have a very keen sense of smell. It also may be why he is rubbing his muzzle in the grass. I think it's great that you'll be spending a night away from the place to see how he acts. If he is fine, there's your answer. If he is still acting abnormally, it may be a good idea to sit and think of anything he could possibly have gotten into in your apartment - prescription drugs, toxins, etc. He may be having a reaction to something else, and the paint smell is a coincidence. If you think of anything, poison control is just a phone call away, and they usually have the most up and coming treatment recommendations for toxin ingestion of any kind. It can take up to a couple of days to see problems from a foreign body if one was going to occur, but given that Snowball ate a very small paint chip, I doubt that will happen. I'd also expect to see some GI upset by now. It's great that she is eating, drinking, and behaving normally, and I wouldn't be too worried about her. In all likelihood, she will be just fine. While modern paints do not contain lead, chewing wood can still cause intestinal injury and even result in foreign bodies. Signs of this would include lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, and/or diarrhea. You should do your best to reprimand Louie if you see him chewing the wall or furniture, and can even try some Bitter Apple spray to deter the chewing. I hope this helps and that all is well!

He will likely be fine as the exposure was minimal and you decontaminate him soon after. Monitor for excessive drooling, vomiting or muscle weakness. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. As long as he continues to behave normally though, he should be fine.

The good news is that from my research, Behr has never made a paint that contained lead pigment. Because it doesn't contain lead, it's much safer but you may see some mild GI upset from this ingestion in the form of vomiting. I can give you a home remedy for Tiger in case you do see vomiting. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
