My dog is sneezing and snotty but still energetic. Allergies or cold?

Hi there. Sneezing could be caused by allergies, or an upper respiratory infection. If he's acting fairly normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active, etc.) you could opt to monitor him for now and see how things go for the next few days. The problem may resolve on its own, similar to when we get a minor cold or allergy flare-up. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if your pup develops other symptoms such as coughing, thick green or yellow nasal discharge, or begins acting very lethargic or not eating, then I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian for treatment.

I would recommended Kaya see her veterinarian for an exam so her vet can determine whether or not she has an infection or whether it is just caused by an allergy and to determine what treatment may be most appropriate. Yes, dogs can get respiratory infections. I think it would be a good idea to take her into the vet for an exam if her symptoms continue over the next 48 hours. She may benefit from some antibiotics to help with the infection.

I'm sorry Maisy isn't feeling well at the moment. Don't worry about the temperature of her nose, as it's not considered a sign of illness in dogs. That's because a dog's nose can change from cold to warm just by sitting next to a heat source or lying in the sun. The sneezing could be caused by a respiratory infection or allergies. I would monitor Maisy for now, and should the sneezing continue over the next 24-48 hours, she become lethargic, her appetite diminishes, and/or she develops other signs, I would have her seen by a vet.

Periodic sneezing can just be a sign of allergic rhinitis, especially if he is otherwise eating well and behavior hasn't changed. Contact your vet to see if there are some antihistamines that can be tried for now, then continue to monitor him to see if the sneezing improves over the next few days. It could be an upper respiratory tract infection, allergies, something stuck in the nasal cavity, among a few other things. If Dior is otherwise normal, I would continue to monitor him at home for signs of illness, such as lethargy, rectal temperature over 103, coughing, decreased appetite, etc. If these occur, then he should definitely get checked out by a vet.
