Why is my dog smelly, gassy, and bloated after finishing antibiotics?

The flatulence is gross and scary, but not medically dangerous. The antibiotics may by upsetting Freybug's stomach a bit. Don't stop the antibiotics, since they are important for clearing up her skin. You can give her some probiotics and feed her a bland diet of chicken and rice for a week to help settle her stomach. If she's having diarrhea or vomiting, let your vet know and they may be able to switch her to a different antibiotic. Good luck!

We certainly can see some dogs that will take in extra air into their GI tract when they have anesthesia, but it would be very odd for that extra gas to last for 2 weeks. I think the answer partially depends on the time frame. If the gas started when you transitioned back from I/D to the regular diet, I wonder if the transition was a little too fast for Baby Girl. In general, The Honest Kitchen is a wonderful company and the digestive supplement is good for any GI upset or soft stool, but it does have some fiber in it, so if Baby Girl is sensitive to increased levels of fiber, then that could certainly cause extra gas. I think the easiest test would be to stop the Gastrointestinal Supplement for a few days and see if the gas improves. If not, then you may need to look at her diet. Good luck! Change his diet to boiled chicken and rice a GI formukabsince it is easy to digest. You can also add a probiotic to the food to help replenish the good, normal bacteria. If this does not help you can try gas x. If it continues then I would consider a check for parasites and blood work to make sure oral medicine is it needed

I hate to hear that Jersey is not feeling well. I do think the continuing diarrhea and regurgitation do indicate that she did not respond like she should have to the antibiotic. No knowing her full history, its hard to say what could be causing it but in puppies, parasites including Giardia are very common. You can also see infections in the GI tract, chronic foreign in bodies, organ dysfunction and food allergy as other causes. If Jersey is acting normal, has a good energy level and normal pink gums, I would recommend to make an appointment with her normal veterinarian to discuss next steps. The doctor may recommend a special diet, bloodwork and/or radiographs to start trying to figure out what is going on. She or he may also recommend special parasite testing depending on where you live. Feed Jersey small amounts of boiled white breast chicken meat and white rice. Make sure she is drinking water and keep her in a cool, comfortable area. If Jersey seems to be uncomfortable, has pale gums, seems weak or in distress, then you should go to the emergency clinic. Bella had a bit of an ileus develop after the diarrhea & antibiotics, & the gas is an indication that her bowels are moving. She will probably have a BM in the next day or so. It might also be a good idea to include a good probiotic in her diet for the next 30 days. Fortiflora is an excellent pet product, or you can use Culturelle, a human probiotic. If this is the only sign you could try changing to a highly digestible diet (like Hill’s i/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat) as long as she doesn’t have any food intolerances or diseases requiring a therapeutic diet. Sometimes I also have people try a probiotic like Fortiflora. If she has also had a decrease in appetite, diarrhea or weight loss you should see your veterinarian.

It sounds like your dog has a case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon, resulting in an increase in the volume and frequency of stools. 

Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. 

 If your dog’s current treatment does not resolve the diarrhea after a few days he may need a more extensive workout and treatment.
