Why is my dog gassy after dental surgery, food change, or supplement?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 10 years and 4 months old | 6.5 lbs

my yorkies just had periodontal surgery on the 1st and since then she has had some serious gas issues. It actually scares her it's so loud sometimes and very smelly. The vet put her on royal canin I/D for a week before surgery and since then she has returned to her same food she has been eating for several months. I also started to give her Honest Kitchen gastrointestinal supplement......could it be the supplement or from the anesthesia?

We certainly can see some dogs that will take in extra air into their GI tract when they have anesthesia, but it would be very odd for that extra gas to last for 2 weeks. I think the answer partially depends on the time frame. If the gas started when you transitioned back from I/D to the regular diet, I wonder if the transition was a little too fast for Baby Girl. In general, The Honest Kitchen is a wonderful company and the digestive supplement is good for any GI upset or soft stool, but it does have some fiber in it, so if Baby Girl is sensitive to increased levels of fiber, then that could certainly cause extra gas. I think the easiest test would be to stop the Gastrointestinal Supplement for a few days and see if the gas improves. If not, then you may need to look at her diet.

Poor Blue! The anaesthetic combined with the pain of the teeth clean can really upset their tummies. You could try feeding a diet of plain chicken and rice for a few days, but I'd urge you to give your vet a call. They shluld be able to prescribe you a gastroprotectant liquid that can help settle the tummy. If the diarrohea dies not settle it will need to be treated too.

If this is the only sign you could try changing to a highly digestible diet (like Hill’s i/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat) as long as she doesn’t have any food intolerances or diseases requiring a therapeutic diet. Sometimes I also have people try a probiotic like Fortiflora. If she has also had a decrease in appetite, diarrhea or weight loss you should see your veterinarian.

I'm sorry Ranger had a GDV but am glad she survived. You can try feeding her smaller more frequent meals. She may also require something for the gas. I would call your veterinarian to see if they can dispense something for her without seeing her.

Is my dog's poop normal after dental surgery and anesthesia?

I am glad to hear she seems to be feeling well. Occasionally, the Gi tract will have a mild temporary change during/after anesthesia which can result in the changes in the stool that you saw. I would recommend that you feed her a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice) for the next couple of days. My dog's gas smells like his new food. Is this a health concern?

Hello. This much gas is of concern, but it is not an indication that nutrients are not being utilized. Hills i/d is a high fiber food, and the intestinal bacteria may just be trying to adjust to the new diet. This might take several weeks. If the gas production is still overwhelming, I might try one of the hypoallergenic diets like the Prescription Diet z/d & see if this helps with the gas. Always remember to take your time to when switching diets taking 4-10 days to completely change over from the old to the new food. Hope this helps Oscar's little problem. Why is my dog gassy and farting after changing to a new food?

Yes, you are correct that the change in diet can cause Quincey to have this gas. It was an excellent idea to bring him to the vet for a health check, and I'm glad she said everything looked ok. I think it's also an excellent idea to feed him the Royal Canin gastro for the next few days. If that helps with his gas, I would slowly add back in his diet. As for his diet, I'd recommend going back to the Royal Canin. I'm not sure why you would switch foods, but it does seem like the new diet doesn't agree with his stomach, and unless you want to deal with a lot of farts, I'd put him back on a food that doesn't give him gas :-)
