My dog smells like maple syrup. Is this a normal or concerning odor?

Hello, I wouldn't worry about the smell of maple syrup alone. Bart probably rubbed his head on or rolled in something fragrant. Signs of diabetes in cats include increased thirst and urination and increased appetite combined with weight loss. Alexander is a handsome guy! If he is otherwise acting healthy, this is not really cause for concern. Is he eating normally? If he is showing any other symptoms, or if you suspect a wound in his mouth, take him to your vet. However usually a wound or infection in the mouth results in more of a foul odor. I really don't think it is anything to be worried about. I am not sure why he would have this smell. Usually a sweet smell of the breath is in relation to diabetes but her sure is young to have that, but it is not impossible. I suggest you just keep monitoring him and if the smell does not resolve or you start noticing her is drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot more he should see a vet.

This odor can be a sign of diabetes, which would be rare in a puppy this young, but not impossible, or a fungal infection (malassezia and/or yeast) which is common. Kidney disease and mouth ulcers can also cause such odors. Please have Madison examined by your veterinarian, as this odor is not normal.

If you feel your dog's nose has a bad/foul odor, that could be a sign of respiratory infection or a dental infection, and would be a reason to visit his veterinarian. It is possible he could have a different scent from something he came into contact with outside or in your home, or from a new food/treat. Some people can smell ketones when animals may be sick or in a diabetic crisis (not all people can detect this scent) which is described as a chemical smell or a fruity smell. If your dog has had any alteration in appetite/water intake/energy level/urinary habits a vet visit is recommended.

Also, it is quite common for puppies and dogs in general that they roll on something that may have a scent such as urine in the grass from another dog for example. An unusually sweet or fruity smell coming from your cat can be indicative of diabetes. I highly recommend that you have your cat examined by his/her veterinarian ASAP. With proper treatment, diabetes is a managable disease in cats.
