Why does my 4-month-old puppy's breath smell sweet like marshmallows?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 months and 25 days old | 50 lbs

Romeo is just over 4 months old. We rescued him at about 9 weeks old. Not a lot know about previous health, but at last booster shot appointment, everything looked great. His breath smells sweet now. It changed afew hours after giving him a couple bits of apple as a treat. But it has lingered a few days. Nothing else wrong. He's losing his baby teeth. High energy. Barks to get attention like usual. Plays with our other two dogs just the same. I'm clueless. Why does he smell like marshmallows?

I really don't think it is anything to be worried about. I am not sure why he would have this smell. Usually a sweet smell of the breath is in relation to diabetes but her sure is young to have that, but it is not impossible. I suggest you just keep monitoring him and if the smell does not resolve or you start noticing her is drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot more he should see a vet.
