Why does my puppy have a foul smell after coming in from outside?

It sounds like your dogs might have rolled in something dead. Most dogs like rolling in stinky dead stuff...... Maybe they were sprayed by a skunk. If they got sprayed by a skunk de-skunk them as follows: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/de-skunking_dog.html If they rolled in something dead or feces, bathe them with a dog or horse shampoo, if you have some, or people shampoo, if you do not have a suitable pet shampoo.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The smell comes from normal bacteria and yeast on the dogs skin and fur. The water causes them to release smelly chemicals. I am not sure if it actually ammonia though. I hope this helps!

Hello, and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Most groomers will express (empty) the anal glands; I wonder if that's the odor your smell. I recommend washing around Wynter's anus gently with mild soapy water and see if that resolves the odor. If it continues, you may need to bring Wynter in to the vet to get checked out, as a persistent odor is often a sign of infection (of the skin, ears, lip fold, etc). Hope this helps!

This could just be a normal "dog" smell and he may need a bath. Make sure you use a puppy shampoo. Also some dogs will express their anal glands (2 glands one on each side of anus that help to lubricste bowel movements) if they get nervous or if they are full and smell really bad. Your vet clinic should be able to express these for you. Also dogs that have yeast or bacterial infections in the ears or skin could also be the reason for the odor so if the bath or anal glands expression doesn't help then I would have your vet do an exam to make sure there isn't an infection somewhere. This may be in the skin per se or possibly in the anal sac region. I would recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This odor can be a sign of diabetes, which would be rare in a puppy this young, but not impossible, or a fungal infection (malassezia and/or yeast) which is common. Kidney disease and mouth ulcers can also cause such odors. Please have Madison examined by your veterinarian, as this odor is not normal.
