My dog's nose smells like cardboard. Should I worry or see a vet?

Different odors have different causes. A foul odor may indicate a bacterial infection. A yeast infection sometimes smells like Fritos. A fruity smell can indicate ketones created by diabetes. Dental disease also has a strong smell. Anal gland "juice" smells fishy. If you can't figure out where the odor is coming from, I would have Muffin examined by the vet.

This odor can be a sign of diabetes, which would be rare in a puppy this young, but not impossible, or a fungal infection (malassezia and/or yeast) which is common. Kidney disease and mouth ulcers can also cause such odors. Please have Madison examined by your veterinarian, as this odor is not normal.

It could be rubbed up against plants that give off that odor, making him smell that way. It could also be from a metabolic problem, or a yeast ear infection. Give him a bath to see if the smell goes away; if not, I would definitely have this checked out by his vet if he still smells like this in the morning. I hope this helps!

If he is showing any other symptoms, or if you suspect a wound in his mouth, take him to your vet. However usually a wound or infection in the mouth results in more of a foul odor. It could be Precious has a skin infection caused by yeast leading to that smell. The only way to know for sure is to have her seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose the cause of the smell, and can treat her for it. Since the smell is so bad, I'd take her into a vet today or tomorrow. Best of luck.

A foul smell could still be related to a tooth infection or other oral disease even though her mouth looks normal. Sometimes stomach upset can cause foul breath or a skin infection or anal gland infection or inflammation could be another source. You may want to have Molly examined by your veterinarian - they could check her anal glands or potentially perform a more complete oral exam. If everything seems okay they might recommend trying a probiotic or changing her diet.
