My dog has a small, movable lump on his neck. When to worry?

Hi my cavapoo has a small pea sized movable lump on his neck. It’s in the muscle we think. It’s not bothering him but is obvious a worry.

The best thing to do since it does not bother him is monitor the growth. If it changes or get larger or seems painful then I would have it checked immediately. If it does not go away after 2 months then I would have it checked. It may be a cyst or abscess or tumor.

Any new growths you find on your dog should be checked by your vet. There is no way for us to tell you over the internet what this lump is. It could be just another lipoma (fatty tumor) or a benign cyst but it could also be something more serious like a mast cell tumor.

I suggest you get Mr. Snort to your vet for an exam. It is not an emergency but I would try to get him there in the next few days. I would be worried that the lump came up so quickly and that it is so large.

It could be a cyst, a wart, or some other benign or malignant growth. The only way to know for certain what a bump is is to take a sample of cells with a needle or biopsy for examination under a microscope. If it seems to bother your dog or appears to be growing rapidly, be sure to have this lesion checked out in the next week or two. Otherwise, if your dog isn't bothered and the lesion doesn't seem to be changing much, I would recommend having it checked out by a vet in the next couple of months.

My dog has a soft, movable bump on her neck. Should I worry?

Dogs and people have lymph nodes under the skin in the neck area. They are firm, oval usually and do move a little when they are touched. If your dog had a flea bite reaction or skin irritation/infection from scratching the lymph nodes may be a little bigger than normal and easier to feel. From your description this is nothing I’m overly concerned about. I would check the bump every few days, if it is getting larger or becomes painful she may have an infection so then I would take her in for an exam and treatment. This is likely a harmless wart, especially since it has not changed in size or shape for many months. Continue monitoring it and if it changes in shape, size or color have your veterinarian examine it. Your vet may then want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

My 2-month-old puppy has a sudden, non-painful neck lump. What is it?

This lump in your puppy’s skin is probably nothing to worry about. It could be from an insect bite or sting or may be a reaction to a vaccine he had in that area. Keep an eye on it for now. If it becomes larger, painful, or red, then take him to your vet right away. Or if he starts acting lethargic, vomits/has diarrhea or stops wanting to eat, you should take him to be checked out.
