My dog poops small amounts often. Is it a blockage or growth?

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach about your concerns with Fiddle! There could be a couple of reasons why his stools have changed recently. It certainly is possible that he has a blockage from the bully stick and/or beef esophagus. Intestinal blockages can and do cause a reduction in stools and diarrhea. It could also be that he has intestinal worms or a GI illness causing these symptoms among other causes. Given that it's been almost a week now, I do recommend taking him into a vet. I would feel comfortable trying a home remedy if this problem had been going on for around 24 hours, but problems occurring this length in time do require a vet visit. In addition, because there is a concern his problems could be due to a blockage, that makes it even more important he sees a vet. I would take him into a vet today if possible; otherwise, get him into one first thing in the morning. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Your dog may have diarrhea or constipation issues. You can try a high fiber diet like Hills I/d for a few days and see if this clears up the issues, or add canned pumpkin to her food. If this doesn't seem to solve the issue, she needs to see a vet for fecal tests to see what's going on. She may need to be dewormed or to be on probiotics or antibiotics. Hope that helps!

Hello. With a partial obstruction, some stool could still pass by, but if Harper Grace is still eating & drinking well, & there in no belly pain, then I would not expect any kind of obstruction. Watch her over the weekend, & if she continues to eat & behave normally, then you can stop worrying. I am sorry for the loss of your mother. Changing diets can certainly cause changes in stool appearance and size. The Royal Canin hypoallergenic diet is a higher quality diet than Kibbles and Bits, which typically results in less waste due to fewer filler ingredients. Higher quality diets often result in slightly smaller and less frequent stools. If Spock had an obstruction, I would expect profuse vomiting, anorexia and lethargy, so this sounds unlikely. As long as Spock is eating and active with no evidence of vomiting or diarrhea, it doesn't sound like there is cause for concern! :-)

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! As long as he is not straining to defecate, this should not be an issue. If you would like to increase the size of the stool, I would add fiber to the diet or feed a high fiber dog food. This should help bulk up the stool. I hope this helps! Increased production of abnormal stools might be due to different causes: parasitic infestation and dietary indiscretion are the most common but other diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), intestinal bacteria overgrowth cannot be excluded at this stage. Make sure you are providing a good quality and balanced diet and if the problem is not quickly resolving I would recommend to seek your veterinarian advice and to perform a fecal analysis.

Vomiting and diarrhea can be seen with an intestinal blockage OR a quick change in diet, but they can also be caused by food allergy, intestinal parasites, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. Dogs with diarrhea will often APPEAR constipated because they have the urge to defecate but there is nothing there to get out. I would recommend that Tikari get checked out by a vet, as dogs with both vomiting and diarrhea can get dehydrated easily. After an exam, the vet may recommend bloodwork, intestinal parasite screening, x-rays or ultrasound. Costs can vary drastically from clinic to clinic, so you might call your clinic ahead of time to inquire about the costs of diagnostics.
