Why is my dog sluggish, not eating, with hot spots and a sore tail?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 65 lbs

My dog has been sluggish and not eating much I noticed today what seemed like hot spots are all over his body and he has a sore on his tail that looks infected.

Poor Chief! Some of these lesions could be deep and all look infected, likely with bacteria. His skin could be making him feel too bad to eat as well as too painful/inflamed to walk/move. I don't think these spots will respond to just over the counter pet shampoos. I recommend your veterinarian do an exam and you discuss topical and oral antibiotics as well as what could have caused this (allergies, insects, immune system issues).
In the meantime sometimes boiled chicken/white rice (warmed) could help a dog eat as well as canned food if his normal diet is wet food.
Do not give any human pain medication as they can be very toxic to dogs and cause more issues.

Poor Cheif! Looks like he may be having an allergic reaction to something and has a secondary bacterial infection. These sores need to be treated. Try to prevent him from chewing or licking at them. You can purchase a cone collar to help prevent this. Also, I strongly recommend contacting your veterinarian for an exam, possible diagnostics, and medication.

Also I want to add that the vet will likely shave these areas, clean them thoroughly and he will need some antibiotics. They may also put him on something for the itching. Unfortunately, I do not believe benadryl will be strong enough.

It sounds like Merlin may ha e a skin infection, called pyoderma. Other possibilities include fungal infection, immune disorder, or even cancer. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime you can consider bathing in chlorhexidine or salicylic acid shampoo. Poor Kato! I'm sorry to hear that he's having this problem. Focal spots of redness, hair loss, itching, and scabs are often called "hot spots" - these are usually caused by a bacterial skin infection, and are often related to an underlying allergy problem. In my experience, oral medications (usually a steroid and antibiotic) are usually needed to get these to clear up - so if your veterinarian hasn't given you anything like this, I would suggest calling or taking Kato back in for a recheck to talk about starting some additional meds. In a dog this age, it's also possible that he may have an underlying hormonal problem like hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease that is contributing to his skin issues, so you may also want to talk to your veterinarian about possibly testing for these problems.

My dog has weeping sores, licks, and lost fur. Hotspot spray failed.

Without an accurate diagnosis it is impossible to guess the most appropriate management for any skin condition. I would recommend a sedated exam if he is uncomfortable being handled in order to confirm or rule out causes such as infection, allergy, mites etc as each would require different treatment. If you feel he is food sensitive then a hydrolysed diet such as royal canin hypoallergenic should be trialled for 8-12 weeks (no treats, snacks or flavoured tablets to be fed during this time). Depending on the diagnosis, fatty acid supplements, medicated shampoos, allergy medications and flea/mite prevention may also be required to ease the constant discomfort and irritation

My dog has hot spots. Could his food be the cause? What can I do?

Pets can get skin lesions for many reasons. Food allergies are possible but they typically account for less than 10% of all skin issues. I think though at this time it's fair to suspect that the food is related but obviously, this could be a wrong assumption. At home you can apply a dab of coconut oil to the spots and rub it in well. Make sure to keep Odin from licking the spots by using an elizabethan collar. If the spots don't start getting better within a week or if they continue to get worse, I recommend to have him seen by the veterinarian. For general food recommendations, I like Royal Canin. Most pets who eat this diet have a nice coat and good stool quality. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction and please post again with any further questions.

Why are my dog's hot spots worse after using special shampoo?

A lot of skin conditions can look like hot spots, bacterial skin infection, ringworm, even mite infections, and allergies, flea bites and other itchy lesions. each on of these is treated with a different medication or avoidance of allergens, etc. Therefore it is very important to have a correct diagnosis, ie know what is causing the hot spot so the proper treatment can be initiated. I strongly recommend you schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam of the hot spots. Your vet may want to do a skin scraping or a take a swab or brush sample to help determine the cause and then specifically address the problem.

Dog's hot spot returned with diarrhea, lethargy, and aggression.

Poor guy. This sounds like more than just a hot spot now and possible has developed into a bacterial infection in his bloodstream or something more. It is hard to say without seeing pictures of the area, but I would highly recommend taking Chaos back in to your vet for a second look. We need to get his vitals and potentially even some bloodwork to evalute his internal organs now. Best case scenario is that he is having an adverse reaction to the antibiotics and just needs to go on a different one. But we need to make sure this is just a hot spot and not something like ringworm or a staph infection. I do hope that your pet Chaos is going to be able to recover from this severe infection.
