Why are my dog's hot spots worse after using special shampoo?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 70 lbs

My dog looks like she has hotspots. I tried bathing her in shampoo that specializes in hotspots, but it looks like it is getting worse. What should I do?

A lot of skin conditions can look like hot spots, bacterial skin infection, ringworm, even mite infections, and allergies, flea bites and other itchy lesions.
each on of these is treated with a different medication or avoidance of allergens, etc. Therefore it is very important to have a correct diagnosis, ie know what is causing the hot spot so the proper treatment can be initiated. I strongly recommend you schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam of the hot spots. Your vet may want to do a skin scraping or a take a swab or brush sample to help determine the cause and then specifically address the problem.

Poor pup! It does sound like she's very uncomfortable. In my experience, unless they are very mild, hot spots virtually always require prescription antibiotics and a short-term steroid or other anti-inflammatory medication to treat effectively - topical shampoos and ointments are not enough to fix the problem. Because of this, I would really recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as soon as you can - he/she can prescribe appropriate medication to get rid of the hot spots, and can also talk to you about possible underlying allergies or other problems that may be causing them.

I am sorry to hear about Leia! These are often most easily treated by your vet because we do usually recommend clipping the fur around the area to allow it to be properly cleaned with an antibacterial shampoo such as Duoxo Chlorhexidine, and then use a topical spray such as Gentocin spray or something like this https://www.zymox.com/zymox-topical-spray-hot-spots-skin-infections in milder cases. In some instances this can be very painful which is why the help of your vet may be needed. If severely itchy or painful we sometimes need oral medications. Why are my husky's recurring hot spots not healing with shampoo?

Poor Kato! I'm sorry to hear that he's having this problem. Focal spots of redness, hair loss, itching, and scabs are often called "hot spots" - these are usually caused by a bacterial skin infection, and are often related to an underlying allergy problem. In my experience, oral medications (usually a steroid and antibiotic) are usually needed to get these to clear up - so if your veterinarian hasn't given you anything like this, I would suggest calling or taking Kato back in for a recheck to talk about starting some additional meds. In a dog this age, it's also possible that he may have an underlying hormonal problem like hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease that is contributing to his skin issues, so you may also want to talk to your veterinarian about possibly testing for these problems.

Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the itch. Dog still has frequent hotspots after bath and diet change. Help!

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat Rover with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get him to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start him on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting him on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).

Why does my dog have red bumps on shaved skin not responding to cream?

It is likely dermatitis, ie bacterial infection, as the skin may be irritated from the shaving and the hotspot likely was infected with bacteria. Steroid ointment will not help, but rather make it worse. Your dog will likely need prescription antibiotics from your veterinarian after an exam and cleaning and disinfecting the site.
