Dog has red spots, sore hot spots, and won't eat. What should I do?

Poor Chief! Some of these lesions could be deep and all look infected, likely with bacteria. His skin could be making him feel too bad to eat as well as too painful/inflamed to walk/move. I don't think these spots will respond to just over the counter pet shampoos. I recommend your veterinarian do an exam and you discuss topical and oral antibiotics as well as what could have caused this (allergies, insects, immune system issues). In the meantime sometimes boiled chicken/white rice (warmed) could help a dog eat as well as canned food if his normal diet is wet food. Do not give any human pain medication as they can be very toxic to dogs and cause more issues.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria and commonly called hot spot). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. Hello. If his skin is damaged, then you want to use an antibacterial shampoo until the lesions heal. Anything with Benzoyl Peroxide or Chlorhexidine will work well. You will need to probably bathe him every few days, so alternate with a shampoo that has anti-itch properties such as Pramoxine or 1% hydrocortisone. The key to using any medicated shampoo is to make sure you leave the lather on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Finally, you should use a skin barrier preparation that contains ceramides. The first picture of the brown legs looks very suspicious of possibly mites to me, especially if he is itchy. The other 2 pictures looks ok like they might just be an elbow callous and I am less worried about that. Regardless, I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. A lot of skin conditions can look like hot spots, bacterial skin infection, ringworm, even mite infections, and allergies, flea bites and other itchy lesions. each on of these is treated with a different medication or avoidance of allergens, etc. Therefore it is very important to have a correct diagnosis, ie know what is causing the hot spot so the proper treatment can be initiated. I strongly recommend you schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam of the hot spots. Your vet may want to do a skin scraping or a take a swab or brush sample to help determine the cause and then specifically address the problem.

Pets can get skin lesions for many reasons. Food allergies are possible but they typically account for less than 10% of all skin issues. I think though at this time it's fair to suspect that the food is related but obviously, this could be a wrong assumption. At home you can apply a dab of coconut oil to the spots and rub it in well. Make sure to keep Odin from licking the spots by using an elizabethan collar.
