Should I be concerned if my dog is sleeping, licking lips, burping?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What you are describing sounds as if he is nauseous from something. It is difficult to say what is going on without seeing it in person or on a video. I would withhold food for at least 8 hours and then feed a bland diet of chicken and rice. Feed this at least 3 days beyond the resolution of the symptoms. If these symptoms persist or worsen, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps. It sounds like Holly could be having some nausea since she is licking her lips and swallowing or possibly abdominal/back pain. If it continues than she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can do an examination, run lab work, and take x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to help treat her problem. She may need some gastric protectants, antacids and/or pain medication. Hope she feels better soon.

Decreased appetite is concerning in a puppy because of the potential very serious gastrointestinal infections such as parvovirus that they can get. Monitor him closely for progression of his already decreased appetite, nausea (which may manifest as drooling, decreased appetite and lip smacking), vomiting, severe lethargy and/or diarrhea. If any of these signs are observed, have him evaluated right away. I think that if he is otherwise doing fine, then it is ok to monitor him for now. If he has not improved by tomorrow, then have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Make sure that he is drinking water to avoid dehydration. Good luck! Those symptoms could indicate issues such as stress, nausea/GI upset, or even something stuck in the throat or mouth. Since items can get lodged far enough back to not be seen just by looking in the nose or mouth, it would be best to bring Kona into your vet for an exam. You vet can take a closer look (with sedation as needed) to see if there is an apparent cause.

Chronic licking is a common sign of nausea, as well as hypersalivation. Nausea can be caused by many conditions such as dietary indiscretion (eating things Bella shouldn't be), intestinal parasites, foreign bodies, and pancreatitis. If Bella is consistently doing this, it is worth it to rule out the conditions above. Your vet may recommend bloodwork, x-rays, and possibly an abdominal ultrasound. Her lip licking may indicate that she is nauseous, and this could be contributing to her decreased appetite. Since she is an older girl, I recommend having her seen by your veterinarian at their next available appointment. He/she can do an exam and may recommend bloodwork to determine if there is any underlying liver or kidney disease that could be contributing to her clinical signs. You can watch closely for signs consistent with these conditions such as abdominal pain or discomfort, vomiting and/or inappetence and have him evaluated right away if noticed.
