My dog ate a pork bone. He's licking lips and not acting right. Vet?

Most small bones will be softened during digestion in the stomach. They can usually pass without an issue, however fatty or salty meats can irritate the intestinal tract causing problems like pancreatitis. I would monitor Nana for signs of vomiting,diarrhea or abdominal pain and have her seen by your veterinarian if noted.

Chronic licking is a common sign of nausea, as well as hypersalivation. Nausea can be caused by many conditions such as dietary indiscretion (eating things Bella shouldn't be), intestinal parasites, foreign bodies, and pancreatitis. If Bella is consistently doing this, it is worth it to rule out the conditions above. Your vet may recommend bloodwork, x-rays, and possibly an abdominal ultrasound. Licking the lips can sometimes be a sign of nervousness, nausea, or even an issue with the teeth or mouth. If he hasn't had a dental cleaning recently, tartar on the teeth or gums could be causing some irritation and thus the licking behavior. Nausea such as from minor GI upset, may also cause drooling, or have signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, but this is not always the case. If it continues or you see any signs of illness/smell bad breath, etc, having your vet take a look is best. If you've changed something in his environment around the time the licking started (new pet, people, items in the house, etc) it could be that he's feeling a bit nervous or uncomfortable as well. Making sure he gets some extra attention and the cause of the nervousness is addressed (IE making sure he has someplace to go rest and hide, using a pheromone diffuser, etc) may help.

Sometimes skin infections can be quite painful and cause enough discomfort to cause them to stop eating and to become lethargic. Dietary indiscretion, eating things they shouldn't, can cause stomach and intestinal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, and pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is painful. If there was a bone with in the steak then yes, that could be why he is experiencing abdominal pain. When dogs experience pain their behavior can be very odd: run around like something bit them, clingy, doing the downward dog or prayer position, act lethargic, shake, pant. The best thing for D, since he is showing signs of pain, is to have him seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They may wan to take belly X-rays to be sure the bone is breaking down and isn't stuck. Otherwise I would fast him for 12 hours then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or starts vomiting he needs to see a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish D the very best!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Meeko. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian right away. His symptoms are worrisome. There is a chance that the bone has become lodged in his stomach or intestines. If so, this requires emergency surgery. I hope this information helps!

If Zoey was able to swallow the food and water, I don't think the pork chop bone would be stuck in her throat. It could be upsetting her stomach. Keep a close eye on her, and if she is still acting this way in the morning, have her seen by a vet. Take her into a vet immediately if she starts vomiting, there is blood in her vomit, blood in her feces, she has diarrhea, stops eating, or becomes lethargic. I hope this helps!
