My dog's skin and nipples turned black after her spay. Is it normal?

Jamee’s spay site looks to be healing well. The dark pigmentation may be related to previous irritation and may go away on its own. Feeding a diet aimed at skin health like Royal Canin or Nutro can also help. An omega 3 fatty acid for dogs can also help. This may be a normal aging change for her. As puppies lose their puppy coats the adult fur can change color and the skin pigment can darken also. If the skin looks normal with no sores I wouldn't worry about it. If she is itchy that may cause changes in the skin color. A veterinary visit is indicated if you are seeing abnormal areas on the skin.

If the darkened skin appeared around where she had a spay incision, it may be that the tissue darkened some during the healing process, she naturally had some darker patches that weren't visible before shaving the area, or you are seeing the spay scar from the incision itself, especially if it was done recently. If the area is bothersome to Zeytin, or is very itchy or rapidly changing in appearance, that could indicate something such as a brewing infection or allergy that should be checked out by your vet.

The pictures look like it could just be normal pigment change. As puppies mature their pigmentation can as well. If the skin is raised, thicker, crusty, or itchy then I would be concerned. If you have any concerns then I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. If there is a concern then a biopsy could easily be done at the time of his neuter. Don't worry - this is perfectly normal pigmentation! The pigment of the skin can gradually change as dogs age. This isn't related to Casper's recent neuter. Other causes of pigment change can occur due to underlying medical conditions, but these typically have other associated signs, such as itching, hair loss, redness, changes in drinking or urination, among others. From the look of Casper's skin in this picture, I wouldn't worry even a little bit! :-)

Thank you for your post! Is there an odor to the skin? When skin changes color like this, it can be due to a skin infection or allergies. Some breeds have darker skin and this can develop later in life.
