Dog skin infection: natural help for itching & hair growth?

Skin infections can vary in healing times based upon how long the infection is present, how deep in the skin the bacteria have penetrated and if there are any underlying allergies. Typically treatment for skin issues is 10 days - 6 weeks. If there are underlying skin issues (or even endocrine gland issues) then the condition will become reoccurring and difficult to clear. For general purpose, oatmeal types shampoos tend to do well for most dogs as it generally doesn't overly dry the skin. I would recommend to have an appointment with a local vet to examine Gunner's skin and see if they feel additional treatment or medicated shampoo is needed. You could add in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement to help with this. It helps to moisturizer the skin from the inside out essentially. Also you can bathe him in an oatmeal based shampoo and a crime rinse afterwards. Hello, I am sorry to hear about Scooby! If his skin is just dry with no lesions or hairloss or itching, you could consider adding a fatty acid supplement to his diet. It's hard to say based on just a photo of the skin. Some samples (cytology) should be taken of the skin cells through your vet first. Based on what is found, we can then select the appropriate treatment for this. Whether that is an antibiotic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, or even steroid is totally dependent on the results of that skin test. In the meantime you can try giving Jack pet formulated fish oils from your local pet store to help combat any inflammation of the skin. Also a good high quality dog food (i.e. Royal Canin, hills science diet, Innova, etc) is best to promote a healthy skin and haircoat. Hello. If his skin is damaged, then you want to use an antibacterial shampoo until the lesions heal. Anything with Benzoyl Peroxide or Chlorhexidine will work well. You will need to probably bathe him every few days, so alternate with a shampoo that has anti-itch properties such as Pramoxine or 1% hydrocortisone. The key to using any medicated shampoo is to make sure you leave the lather on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Finally, you should use a skin barrier preparation that contains ceramides. Poor guy. This looks like a hot spot (bacterial infection), which is caused by any skin irritation or knick to the skin. I would highly recommend taking him back to your vet for antibiotics at this point. You can also purchase an over th counter hot spot spray from your local pet store if you need something to use right away. This will help with topical relief and also treat the infection topically. But ultimately oral antibiotics are a must here. I would also recommend getting Jerry on a high quality flea preventative such as Bravecto, Nexgard, or Simparica just to name a few .
