My dog's skin is burned by undiluted lime sulfur dip. What to do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is find to use the Lyme Sulfur dip even if there are scratches on the skin. Lyme sulfur dip is very drying and may cause skin irritation. Adding Humilac by Virbac or Douxo Seborrhea can help that. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Usually, if just a small amount is ingested, it is not considered dangerously toxic especially if it is ingested by a large dog. However, in some cases it may cause irritation, nausea, vomiting and in rare occasions also gastrointestinal ulcers. You can continue to monitor Bella and if you notice any nausea, vomiting, inappetence or blood in the feces or vomit, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Lime Sulfur dips do carry some risk and the MSDS link here shows some of the risks with its use. https://davismfg.com/resources/uploads/Lime%20Sulfur%20Dip.pdf The suspected deaths that I have recovered in the veterinary files indicate problems arising when the pet accidentally ingests some of the liquid causing corrosive of the GI lining, accidental aspiration of the liquid down the trachea causing pulmonary edema. Also I have commonly seen user error where the applicant didn't dilute the dip properly causing superficial burns. So yes it can be dangerous if any of these things occur. Which is why I generally don't recommend Lime sulfur dips as the first choice of treatment because owners don't always read the safety precautions on the bottle and abide by them, and sometimes accidents do happen. A safer treatment for mites is either oral Bravecto, Nexgard, or Ivermectin 3% (which in itself carries some risks as well that should be discussed with your veterinarian).

Yes, using the lime-sulfur dip will make the fur have a strange crunchy feel to it after it dries. I don't recommend rinsing it off as I do believe it has some residual effect even after dried that can help speed the healing/therapeutic process. Brushing can help the texture feel more normal quicker.

Hello. You can use the lime sulfur dip, just follow the dilution instructions on the bottle very carefully. Apply the dip as best you can to the affected areas, do not get it in the eyes or mouth. You will need to watch this kitty very closely to prevent her from licking or grooming the wet dip. Once it is dried, she should be fine. Repeat the treatments as indicated on the bottle. Lime sulphur dip can be stored at room temperature. The concern with long term storage is that the lime sulphur may precipitate out. This could affect efficacy. You can tell this happened if you see excess crust around the opening or solid matter in the container. If you want specifics on how long the dip lasts, I suggest contacting the manufacturer. They usually list an 800 number or website on the bottle.

It can irritate the eyes, but when done by a professional this risk is usually avoided rather well. If it did happen to get in the eye, then it would irritate the outside of the eye and conjunctiva (pink part around the eye), but would not normally cause any significant damage.
