My dog's skin turned blue after flea treatment, what should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Puppy! I recommend taking her to the Vet. It sounds like she has a bad skin infection from reacting to the medications. The fur should be shaved away, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories should be given. There are great flea and tick medications out there now that are oral: Nexgard, Simparica and Bravecto. The topical flea medications do not work nearly as well. And for puppy this will hopefully avoid reactions like this in the future. I hope this helps and I wish Puppy a speedy recovery!

Sometimes the skin may look like that as a saliva stain due to self-licking which may be due to allergies for examples. If he is not presenting any symptoms, I would not be too concerned about this. If he is having a localized reaction to the ingredients in the topical medication, then it's best to bathe him in an aloe based or oatmeal based shampoo from your local pet store at this point. You have stripped off as much product as you can with the Dawn. Also try applying a topical hot spot spray from your local pet store may help provide some topical relief. Hot spot sprays typically have a steroid in them, which is a good anti-inflammatory. If you see muscle tremors, excessive salivation, paw flicking, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, take her into a vet immediately. Hopefully, she will be fine.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Molly! I do not think it’s a reaction to the topical flea medication. It looks and sounds like a bacterial skin infection. Molly should see your vet for an exam and if they agree be prescribed an oral antibiotic. You can try the below shampoo. It would be rare for this product to cause discoloration like this, but is not unheard of. Dogs can have local reactions to this product, which can cause irritation to the skin and discoloration of the hair. As long as Cass is otherwise acting normal, this is not an emergency and can wait a day or two for treatment. If Cass is having tremors or seizures, then this would be an emergency and require an immediate visit to the vet. Washing the area is a good idea. Use cool water and dog shampoo to wash it off. Rinse the area for at-least five minutes after washing. I hope that helps and Cass gets better soon.
