My small dog got large dog flea medicine. What should I do?

It looks like Libby got about 5x the dose she would normally get. Luckily, the toxic dose is quite high for this medication. One study showed that dogs receiving 10x the dose for 14 days showed no outward effects. The lethal dose in rats is about 1000x the dose. Give this, I'd say Libby is rather safe from having a problem. Look for these signs as a warning for toxicity: Lethargy/depression, vomiting, itching, decreased appetite, diarrhea, hyperactivity, incoordination, trembling, seizures, panting, allergic reactions including hives, vocalization, salivation, fever, and nervousness. Please take Libby to the vet immediately if you see any of those signs. Also, if Libby ate the pill within 2 hours, you could take her to the vet and they can induce vomiting - just to be extra safe. If it's been after two hours, then there's no need to make her vomit, so just keep an eye on her. Overall, I think you have little to worry about.

If he is having a localized reaction to the ingredients in the topical medication, then it's best to bathe him in an aloe based or oatmeal based shampoo from your local pet store at this point. You have stripped off as much product as you can with the Dawn. Also try applying a topical hot spot spray from your local pet store may help provide some topical relief. Hot spot sprays typically have a steroid in them, which is a good anti-inflammatory. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Puppy! I recommend taking her to the Vet. It sounds like she has a bad skin infection from reacting to the medications. The fur should be shaved away, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories should be given. There are great flea and tick medications out there now that are oral: Nexgard, Simparica and Bravecto. The topical flea medications do not work nearly as well. And for puppy this will hopefully avoid reactions like this in the future. I hope this helps and I wish Puppy a speedy recovery!

Hello there! I would recommend you give Sky a bath if you recently (within a few hours) applied the second dose. Continue to monitor her for any unusual behavior, vomiting, diarrhea, skin irritation, etc for the next 12-24 hrs. If you notice any changes Sky should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. You can continue the next months does as scheduled. I suspect that Sky will likely be fine, but definitely keep an eye on her. Hope this helps!

Coco will likely be just fine as long as this was a flea shampoo intended for dogs, and none of it got into his eyes. I recommend drying him gently with a towel and ensuring he stays warm enough. If he stops eating or drinking, or begins showing any unusual clinical signs such as wobbliness, trembling, or seizures, or he starts squinting his eyes, he should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Cats are exquisitely sensitive to flea treatments, so there is a potential this could cause problems in Monty. I would wash him off thoroughly with warm water and Dawn dish soap. Watch him for signs of toxicity which include excessive salivation, paw flicking, ear twitching, vomiting, diarrhea, depression, incoordination, and muscle tremors. If you see any of those, rush Monty into a vet immediately.
