My dog had a tick, now he's sick and won't eat. What's wrong?

Hello, sorry to hear about Rocky. He could have a local infection or mass on his tongue that is painful. The discomfort is likely not allowing him to eat regularly. If this continues, or if the area gets larger, then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian as he may need antibiotics or surgery to treat the area in his tongue. Hi there! If Arlo was bitten by a tick a while ago and is not doing well now, then Arlo may need to be tested for tick borne diseases and put on a month or two on antibiotics. If Arlo is not eating anything, then that is a bit concerning. I would ask your veterinarian to test for tick borne diseases Arlo may be infected with. In the mean time, you may try feeding small amounts of heated food to entice him but I would revisit with your veterinarian about testing and also antibiotics if he is positive for any tick borne diseases. I would take Cyfer into the vet immediately, as it sounds like he is suffering from a tick borne illness. He needs medical attention right away, and the vet can use blood tests to diagnose if he's suffering from a tick borne illness and treat him accordingly.

There are several tick-borne diseases that could cause lethargy. These include lyme disease, rocky mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiciosis and anaplasmosis. If your dog is lethargic, a visit to your vet is recommended. They can perform a good physical exam and may recommend bloodwork including testing for these tick-borne diseases. It is possible the lethargy could be related to the tick, but there are also many other possible causes for lethargy. An exam and bloodwork will help us narrow down the possible causes.

Poor guy. I highly suspect that Ghost may have a tick borne disease that was transmitted when the ticks were feeding on him. I would highly recommend taking him back to your vet for a tick titer test to check for these diseases and also get him started on antibiotics (i.e. Doxycycline is the antibiotic of choice for tick related diseases) right away! If he is still not able to recover well wthin 24 hrs of starting the antibiotics, then you should consider having him hospitalized with IV fluids and around the clock care. His condiiton is not good and I would err on the side of caution. I am so sorry that Ghost is so ill, and I sincerlely hope he is able to make a full and speedy recovery soon. Hello, sorry to hear about Rocky. It sounds like he is feeling unwell but these signs are non-specific. It may be caused by multiple reasons, most often a dietary indiscretion, ingestion of foreign material, or in puppies this young an infection with a virus or parasite may cause this. If Rocky is not eating by tomorrow, or if he begins to vomit, have diarrhea, or lethargy then he needs to be evaluated by his veterinarian immediately. You can offer him a bland diet tomorrow of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken and cottage cheese low fat. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It could be that Rocky is ill causing him to make the painful noises and not eat. Anorexia is a very general sign of illness, and it can be caused by systemic illness, infection, injury, or inflammation. Given that he hasn't eaten in three days, I would have him seen by a vet right away for a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and possible x-rays to diagnose what is causing his symptoms. Once the cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you.
