My dog had puppies. Why is she shivering and has diarrhea?

Hello. As long as Lola is eating & drinking fairly well, nursing the puppies & seeming to be contented, she should be well. If you have not wormed her in the past few months, I would definitely take a stool sample to your veterinarian now to make sure she will not be passing any parasites to her puppies. Because some parasites are inevitable in puppies, & based on what & if your vet sees anything in the stool, you will need to start administering a wormer to the puppies starting at 2 weeks of age. It could be that Anime has a postpartum infection such as mastitis. She could also have a severe GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, or a foreign body. I would take her into a vet asap to get checked out.

It is very serious that Brownis is vomiting and shivering, and this can be a sign of a post-whelping complication such as a metritis (an infection). This causes vomiting and fever (shivering can indicate a fever). If she has it, the puppies may suffer from ingesting toxins passed in the milk, and it is therefore not safe to let nurse. You will have to bottle feed them if she has metritis, and you will need to get puppy formula from the grocery store. You can also get it from your vet, and I would take Brownie and her puppies into a vet immediately. She needs veterinary attention now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Depending on the cause of the diarrhea it could take 24-48 hours for diarrhea to improve. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian when you are able to see if this is expected or if Dallas needs to be rechecked. If she begins vomiting, seems very lethargic, or if you see blood in the diarrhea you should see an emergency veterinarian right away.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Loki! I would have Loki seen on emergency or right at 8 am. I would want to be sure that there is no uterine or mammary gland infection, no retained puppies and that her calcium is normal. Low calcium is serious. If you have the ability to bottle feed the puppies until you can get Loki to the Vet then do that , if you don't then let them nurse. I hope this helps and I wish Loki a speedy recovery!

It is normal for them to clean and eat the placentas but she should have an appetite and be feeling fine. She may need to be checked to see if there are any retained membranes or a uterine infection which can make her feel bad. You can try to give her boiled chicken and rice to help her stool and her appetite. If she seems too weak you may to bottle feed the puppies to let her rest since nursing burns alot of calories.

Hormonal changes or diet changes (such as suddenly switching to the puppy food) can sometimes cause diarrhea post-birth, however if it is continuing, bringing in a fecal sample of Lacey's stool to your vet is a good next step. Your vet can check for common parasites or other issues that could be causing the diarrhea, especially if a bland meal hasn't helped. If the diarrhea continues and the fecal comes back negative, a more thorough exam from your vet is best.
