My dog had puppies 4 weeks ago, shaking, vomiting. What's wrong?

It is very serious that Brownis is vomiting and shivering, and this can be a sign of a post-whelping complication such as a metritis (an infection). This causes vomiting and fever (shivering can indicate a fever). If she has it, the puppies may suffer from ingesting toxins passed in the milk, and it is therefore not safe to let nurse. You will have to bottle feed them if she has metritis, and you will need to get puppy formula from the grocery store. You can also get it from your vet, and I would take Brownie and her puppies into a vet immediately. She needs veterinary attention now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. It could be stomach upset but it could be something more serious like a pyometra. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. I'd have her seen by a vet now to be safe. Best of luck.

Poor Lilly sounds like she isn't feeling well! The shaking can be due to pain and feeling unwell. There are a couple of things this could be including a GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a pyometra. Dogs who aren't spayed are prone to developing these infections of the uterus which are fatal without treatment. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, her abdomen becomes enlarged, you notice a smelly discharge from her vulva, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. If she does have a pyometra, that is a medical emergency and spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Leaving it untreated is fatal. If you do have concerns that she could have a pyometra, I'd recommend taking her into a vet to be safe. I hope this helps!

I would recommend taking Pups to the vet. These symptoms are very concerning, and probably not related to her mammary nodule. It could be dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. The straining and liquid is likely severe diarrhea - similar to humans, you can strain with diarrhea and have nothing come out. The vet will do a thorough exam and may recommend blood work or x-rays to determine what is going on.

I don’t think she is depressed. I think she is probably sick. I worry about a uterine infection called a pyometra. It is a pus filled uterus. It doesn’t happen often just after pregnancy, but it can. If this is her problem it is life threatening without surgery. I would encourage you to take her to your local humane society or city shelter as often they will provide low cost or even free spay and neuter. It could be a sign of uterine infection, remnants of dead fetus within the uterus or mastitis. It still could be gastroenteritis, which is unrelated to the pregnancy and having puppies but I think it is less likely. You should take Sally to your local vets today, as there may be something serious going on. Another concern is that if she is not eating and drinking but feeding the puppies she will get dehydrated very quickly.
