Why does my Shih Tzu have red scabs? Neosporin seems to help.

I would suspect that Augie has an ear infection leading him to itching and rub his eat against the carpet, thus causing the scab you now see. I would take him into the vet today for this problem. Ear infections are caused by ear mites, yeast, or bacteria in dogs, and the cause of the ear infection needs to be diagnosed so he can be prescribed the correct medication. While at the vet, they can treat the scab as well. I would refrain from putting Neosprin on it, you don't want any to get into his ear, it's starting to heal if there is a scab, and it won't do anything to help him if he does have an ear infection. Hot spots can be very difficult to heal, and take a long time. The keys to a successful healing process are; Treating underlying cause of itching- for example fleas A clipped area around the sore Cleaning the sore with a vet prescribed antiseptic Leaving the sore open to dry out (as the moisture promotes bacterial growth) Antibacterial/ hydrocortisone spray prescribed from the vet for healing An e-collar to prevent Zumi from scratching or biting at the hot spot and making it worse Measure the hot spot with a ruler, and compare in a few days time to make sure that it is reducing in size. If you feel like Zumi is not healing well, I would suggest a trip to the vet, or call and discuss the possibility for a prescription. Oral antibiotics and/ or a steroid injection may help to jumpstart the healing process. I know hot spots can be very frustrating for you as a pet parent and for Zumi. These scabs could be due to itching from something such as fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatment, I can give you one for him. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. If he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. It looks like Gizmo has pyoderma/a bacterial skin infection characterized by scaly red collarettes and papules. The typical treatment is a 10 day course of an antibiotic called Simplicef (cefpodoxime), a medicated antibacterial/anti-fungal shampoo such as Malaseb (available on petco.com or chewy.com or at your vet’s) and a topical antibiotic/steroid ointment such as Dermavet or an antibiotic/steroid powder such as Neopredef with tetracaine.
