My dog's sheath is discolored and inflamed. What should I do?

It looks to me by the pictures that the coloration may just be normal pigment. Is this a new change? Is it red or swollen or crusty anywhere? If so that wound warrant a veterinary exam. If it is just his normal pigment with no change then I would say it is likely normal for him. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Hi there and thank you for your post! From the pictures you posted, it looks like Chico may have a hot spot (moist dermatitis) area in front of his prepuce / penis. Some of the area appears to be yellow and this might indicate it is infected. I would get your vet to check this out so that Chico can receive the appropriate treatment. Most likely he will need an oral antibiotic and some topical ointments to treat the area. If he is constantly licking the area, I would get a plastic cone to keep around his head to prevent him from licking the area and making it worse. I hope this helps! I would suggest applying Zymox topical ointment or malacetic conditioning spray to the area to help relieve any irritation and prevent infection. If the area begins to ooze or become swollen / more red, I would have a veterinarian examine the area to see if oral antibiotic therapy is needed. If Ches has been licking or chewing the area, I would purchase a plastic cone to place around his neck so that he cannot access the irritated area as this will make things worse. I hope this helps! Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I actually do think that it looks like a hot spot but honestly, I have never seen one in that location. A hot spot is really just a skin infection so it is certainly possible especially if he was scraped in that general location. I would not be overly concerned about it as it looks superficial. Licking can cause more infection and will delay healing. Hello there and thank you for posting your picture and concern about Choppies! From the picture you sent, it looks like Choppies has caused quite a bit of irritation and inflammation on his scrotum. I would pick up a plastic cone from the pet store to put around his head so that he is not able to lick this and then get him in to see your veterinarian for an examination. There are multiple possible causes of this, which include thermal burn, inflammation of structures inside the scrotum causing Choppies to lick due to the discomfort, infection or behavioral. It is possible he is sensitive to shampoos or if the area was shaved he may have developed 'clipper rash' - very careful grooming in this area will be important to reduce the risk of it happening again. Keeping the cone on for a few days and gently bathing the area in cool water will help - I would not recommend any ointments or creams be applied as they may irritate the area further

Hi, It looks like Romulus has some inflammation around that area, possibly from licking or an infection. I would give him a bath with an oatmeal and aloe shampoo to soothe the region and if that doesn’t help I’d have your vet examine him because he may need antibiotics. Best wishes!
