My dog's sheath is discolored. When should I be concerned about it?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From the pictures it appears as though chewy has a lot of inflammation in this area. I would suspect he has been chewing and licking this area and has caused a hotspot (moist dermatitis). I would recommend placing a rigid plastic cone around the neck to prevent him from licking this area. I would also recommend applying s topical medication such as zymox topical ointment and apply to the area until resolved. You can find this ointment easily online. If the area does not heal or worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at this for further testing and treatment recommendations. As long as it doesn't seem to be bothering her I don't think there is cause for concern. Some pigment around the teat can be normal. Ask your vet to take a peek at it the next time you are in. If she starts to seem itchy, if it becomes painful, or if the air starts to fall out or the skin become red or oozing, take her in. I hope that's helpful! Based on your picture I think this looks like normal pigment, however sometimes dogs can start to get darker skin where they had a dermatitis that is resolving or a chronic skin issue. If the red spots are new or Jaxon seems itchy I would recommend taking him to your veterinarian to have them examine his skin.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Pigmentary changes to the hair/coat are not that unusual, especially if there are no underlying lesions. If your pet ever sustained an injury to that area in the past, even a mild infection or burn, the hair follicles can be affected & color can change months to even years later. So, if she is not bothered by the area, you feel no lumps, bumps, roughness, see no redness or dermatitis, then this may just be a normal change in an unusual area. Just mention it to your vet at your next visit. Take care.

The pictures look like it could just be normal pigment change. As puppies mature their pigmentation can as well. If the skin is raised, thicker, crusty, or itchy then I would be concerned. If you have any concerns then I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. If there is a concern then a biopsy could easily be done at the time of his neuter.
