Why is my dog's genital skin turning dark brown/black? Is it normal?

Thankfully those are totally normal areas of pigment accumulation in the skin. Often they flake off like any other dead skin cells that are exfoliated by the body. It is common to see this around the genitals in dogs and there is no reason to be concerned. Cheers!

If it is not associated with itchiness or discomfort, there is no need to be concerned about this. Everything in the picture appears normal. the dark spot appears to be normal pigment in the skin of he scrotum. The skin can get more or less pigmented as they age, so this may be why you are just now noticing this. As long as the dark areas are not raised, crusty, or causing any other problems with the skin, then they are not concerning. Considering he is otherwise normal, I would not be concerned about this. Thank you for your post! Is there an odor to the skin? When skin changes color like this, it can be due to a skin infection or allergies. Some breeds have darker skin and this can develop later in life. If you are concerned about this I would schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to ensure there is no infection present that needs to be treated. Its hard to tell from the picture, but it could be that the skin there on the scrotum has developed pigment over time, which sometimes happens; he's very young yet if the pet description is accurate (its telling me that Walter is 6 months old), and it may be normal. However, the skin also looks a bit thickened which could indicate that there is some inflammation and infection present. Call your vet and make an appointment to have it looked at to be sure. I don't think it is urgent as long as Walter isn't licking/chewing at it and is acting normally, but I would get him in at your convenience in the next couple of weeks.

Pets can get spots for many reasons including, normal-nonpathogenic pigmentation, infections and endocrine disease. A photo may help to give you the best advice. It is impossible to tell only from a photograph however if this is normal pigment. She would need to be assessed by a veterinarian with a physical exam to determine if there is cause for concern.
