My puppy is shaking, has a tail wound, and a hard leg. What's wrong?

From the pictures, I'm wondering if I can see a bit of bone there, and it may be his mother bit off the end of his tail. It could also just be dry skin. If he is eating, moving around, and is going to bathroom normally, this can wait until Monday. If he is not eating, is very lethargic, and/or isn't going to the bathroom normally, you need to take him into an ER vet immediately. Best of luck.

Usually small breed dogs require to be fed throughout the day every 6 hours or so. However, this could also be due to something else like a toxicity of some kind. Seizures can be detrimental to a dog's health and this warrants an evaluation as soon as possible by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

These types of traumatic lesions can result in a fracture of the tail which can be quite painful. Even when a fracture is not present, this tends to result in a lot of pain. This can happen from insect bite, accidentally tearing a toenail, or a number of other minor, but painful things. It could also be related to a back injury, clot, bladder stone, or other more serious medical conditions- though he’s pretty young for those things. He could also have been scared for some unknown reason (thunder, cat outside, motorcycle reviving up, etc), If you have the ability to check on him at lunch (or have someone else check on him at lunch) that would be ideal, though very likely he will be completely normal by then. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I know you feel bad! We see this happen a lot, puppies and kittens are very squirmy! I would say that 98% of the time the puppies are fine. If she is walking well and not limping, is playing and eating I think she falls in to the category! She still may be a bit sore and that is why her tail isn't wagging. I would watch her closely and I bet she will be 100% very soon! I hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So if he is limping, he is in pain. Shaking is another sign of pain. The question is how much pain and why? Is it a minor, short-lived pain like when you stub your toe? A sprain? Or did he break a bone? The only way to know is to see an emergency vet and take some x-rays. That being said, in most of these cases, they shake it off and are walking normally within a few hours. If he seems OK to you, it is completely reasonable to let him sleep tonight and if he is not himself by morning, then see the vet first thing. If he is worrying you or any other signs arise, you always have the option of heading to the emergency vet tonight. Under no circumstances do I recommend any human pain medication - most are unsafe in dogs. However, if you want to do something for pain, ice can be a tremendous help. Applying an ice pack (wrapped in a thin kitchen towel or paper towel) to the leg for 5 minutes every 4-8 hours is great for inflammation and pain. Best wishes to you and Uno!
