My 1-week-old puppy's tail looks injured. Should I see an ER vet?

These types of traumatic lesions can result in a fracture of the tail which can be quite painful. Even when a fracture is not present, this tends to result in a lot of pain. They would be able to evaluate her and at the very least start medications for pain. Good luck and have a good night!

This will be very painful to her, and there are no OTC pain medications you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. She really should see a vet for this for pain medication, but to also make sure her tail isn't broken. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

Hi there. It looks like your puppy either had an injury or may have someone that is chewing hair off his tail. I'm not sure the shaking is related to the tail wound. If your puppy is eating and drinking, and doesn't have any other abnormal signs, I would try and reassure him that everything is fine by giving him a treat and then having your vet check the tail tomorrow. If Oreo has any other abnormal signs, I would have him checked by a vet tonight because shaking can indicate low blood sugar, fever or other illness. I hope that helps! If it is broken, yes the vet can treat it. It will also be painful to her, and the vet can prescribe pain medication. Please do not give her any human pain medications as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take her into a vet now. I hope this helps!

This is medical emergency and Duke has to see a vet now. This will be extremely painful for him, and I would be concerned that the area is becoming necrotic. He needs veterinary care for this immediately. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I know you feel bad! We see this happen a lot, puppies and kittens are very squirmy! I would say that 98% of the time the puppies are fine. If she is walking well and not limping, is playing and eating I think she falls in to the category! She still may be a bit sore and that is why her tail isn't wagging. I would watch her closely and I bet she will be 100% very soon! I hope this helps and good luck!

The part may be getting infected. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths.
