My dog is shaking, panting, and warm. Can this wait until morning?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Penny Monster is super adorable! The symptoms Penny is exhibiting are sadly vague. Slight decrease in appetite, whining and feeling warm can indicate a lot of things. Dogs tend to feel warmer than us and not have fevers. If she is whining while playing she could be in pain. Her neck or back may hurt or she could have something infectious going on like lyme disease. Lyme is from a tick bite that could have happened over 3 months ago. Also Penny isn't spayed, so anytime an intact female dog isn't acting right we are always worried about an infected uterus (pyometra). I think it is best to take Penny to the Vet sometime this week to have a physical exam done and her temperature taken. Hopefully all will end up normal! I wish you and Penny the best!

There are many possibilities for the symptoms you are describing: Not eating, panting, lethargic, restless. Some things that could be wrong: she could have a fever, she could be in pain (in her belly), she could be in heart failure, have pneumonia or other lung or heart issue, she could have eaten something that is now stuck in her intestines or stomach, lyme disease, she could be bleeding some where or she could have a metabolic problem like kidney failure, liver disease, etc. The possibilities are long and some are serious. The most serious symptom you are reporting is the trouble breathing, that alone is a reason to take her to your Vet today. I wish you the best of luck!

Based on the symptoms you are describing, it is difficult to say for sure what the cause could be. It sounds as though Sugar is not feeling well. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Poor Bow. These symptoms suggest that she either has anxiety from something that scared her or she is having a sudden pain response from somewhere in her body. If the panting episode is continuous and seems labored, she has dulled responses, +/- white or pale gums, or if she seems to be in pain, then I would rush her to the ER vet to have her looked over. However if she is alert, has a normal mentation (aware of her surroundings), panting and shaking are intermittent and not continuous, and if she slowly improves over the next hour as you try to slowly coax her out of her hiding spot, then I would wait it to until morning. Especially if she has a history of anxiety or a recent event (i.e. Thunderstorms, guests over, loud noises, etc) can be seen as a possible cause for her current state. I hope your fur baby is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Hopefully she just got spooked and will return to her normal self after she has time to settle down. Best wishes.

Non-specific signs like you are seeing are a little difficult to pinpoint the source of; shaking can be due to pain, nausea, anxiety, or another underlying issue. I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian to see if they are able to find anything that could explain what is going on, and if any further needs to be done for her. Poor Lily. The answer to your question depends on how she is doing otherwise. As long as she is eating, drinking, going to the bathroom, and doesn't seem overly distressed, you can take her sometime in the next few days. If she's not eating, not drinking, and/or seems upset or in pain, take her into an ER vet. I hope this helps.

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Without knowing specifically what is causing Max's fever, it is impossible to say how much of an emergency it might be. The safest option is always to have him seen immediately in case the fever is serious. With that said, the overall attitude is an important factor to consider when deciding if it's an emergency. As a general rule if a dog is still eating, drinking, and acting reasonably normal, it is probably ok to wait until tomorrow. Even if the appetite isn't completely normal, if you can entice a dog to eat treats or a little bit of bland chicken & rice, that's a good sign. On the other hand, if he is not eating anything, he's notably lethargic, or if there are other symptoms such as vomiting, then it's definitely best to have him seen as soon as possible.
