My dog has a fever. Is it safe to wait until tomorrow for the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 170 lbs

My dog has had fever since yesterday a temp of 103.6 and today 103 I think he may have the flu but not sure how he would get it. can he wait till tomorrow to get seen so i dont have to pay an emergency fee?

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Without knowing specifically what is causing Max's fever, it is impossible to say how much of an emergency it might be. The safest option is always to have him seen immediately in case the fever is serious. With that said, the overall attitude is an important factor to consider when deciding if it's an emergency. As a general rule if a dog is still eating, drinking, and acting reasonably normal, it is probably ok to wait until tomorrow. Even if the appetite isn't completely normal, if you can entice a dog to eat treats or a little bit of bland chicken & rice, that's a good sign. On the other hand, if he is not eating anything, he's notably lethargic, or if there are other symptoms such as vomiting, then it's definitely best to have him seen as soon as possible. Dog has fever after vaccines. When to see emergency vet?

If he is still running a fever after all of this, I would get him seen by an emergency veterinarian to be safe. He may need something stronger such as a steroid to help with a potential reaction. My dog is shaking, panting, and warm. Can this wait until morning?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lentil is very cute and I love her name! Poor baby! I think you can wait until the morning. Her symptoms are are non-specific and can mean a lot of things. A poor appetite, shaking and panting can indicate pain or a fever. She could have hurt her neck or back, have lyme disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body (something stick) amongst many other things. Definitely call your Vet when they open and have her seen today. My dog has flu symptoms. Can I wait until morning to see a vet?

If Pilos is resting and not having labored breathing, he should be ok to wait until tomorrow for his vet visit. Call ahead, and when you arrive the staff may encourage you to wait in the car with him until the vet is ready to examine him, or they may bring you straight into an exam room to prevent spread of infection. Fingers crossed its just a mild respiratory infection, but I'm glad you're taking precautions.

My dog won't eat, is lethargic, and vets are closed. What should I do?

It is hard to state exactly what to do to make Max feel better. He really needs a veterinarian to perform a physical examination on him and some diagnostics. If there is an emergency veterinarian in your area I would recommend bringing him there. I would ask neighbors to see if there is someone open right now. My dog has 104.9 fever, isn't eating, and is lethargic. What's wrong?

A fever this high is usually indicative of a bacterial or viral disease going on. Your veterinarian will need to run some tests to try and determine the cause of the fever. Once the cause is identified the proper antibiotics, antifungals, or antipruritic drugs can be prescribed. The tablet given to your dog is basically a fever reducer but will not treat the cause of the fever. I would recommend taking your dog in for a recheck as soon as you’re able to. My dog has a fever. When should I worry and call the vet immediately?

Make sure it is in-fact a fever. Dogs have a higher temperature than people. If his temperature is less than 39C, then he does not have a fever. Fever usually indicates one of the following: 1). Infection 2) Toxin ingestion 3). Heat stress If he just got done playing and/or running around, then it may be heat stress. The temperature will go down if he stays calm in a cool environment. If it's not heat stress and his temperature is above 39C, then this is an emergency and he needs to go to the vet. Do not give any fever medication meant for people, because these can be dangerous. The vet will have to give special dog medicine to bring down the fever. I hope that helps and all is well with Softie.
