Why is my dog shaking, head down, and acting like he's in pain?

He is painful not afraid. This posture looks like neck pain from a bulging intervertebral disc. This is very painful and is common in small dogs. Please take him to your veterinarian for an exam. They will probably prescribe pain medication, muscle relaxers and an anti inflammatory medication. They may recommend an X-ray also. This is a serious medical problem as the pain can be severe and some dogs become paralyzed. You should not use a collar on Moose, use a harness if needed. Massage and heat on the neck can reduce the muscle spasms and make Moose more comfortable. Also I treat these dogs with laser and acupuncture for the neurological problem, muscle spasm and pain. I'm wondering if you mean that his head is shaking when you say he can't keep it still. That would be involuntary head tremors, and could be caused by an injury, toxins, inflammation, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), weakness, or pain. He might be lethargic as well. You have a couple of options in this case. You can take him into a vet right away for an exam to be safe, and I typically recommend doing that since I can't see the animal in person to say if they will be ok or not. In my opinion, it's always best to be safe and have an animal seen by a vet when there are concerns about their health. The other option is to monitor him for now. If his symptoms continue for the next couple of hours, they worsen, or he develops additional signs such as vomiting, anorexia, seizures, or any other concerning signs, I would take him into a vet right away.

May should be examined by her vet and assessed for the presence of neurological deficits as well as the location of the pain, as this will help to guide her treatment. Until you are able to take May to her vet, keep her confined to a very small room with no furniture or to a crate. She should not be running, jumping, or playing because this could exacerbate any back condition or injury. Do not give her any medication - there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs.
