Is my dog in pain? Shaking, stiff back, tucking tail, not moving.

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 13 lbs

So my dog has just recently been tucking her tail in, and shaking very badly. When I pick her up, she has a more stiff back than usual. I will cover her in a blanket and after a while she finally stops shaking. But then once I put her down, she starts shaking again. She will stop in random places and just lay down, when she usually would only lay on a blanket or someplace warm. Now she will lay down in the middle of the kitchen for no reason. And when she stands, she won't move if you call her.

Poor Phoebe! Shaking like this is a common sign of pain in dogs, especially when there is no other obvious reason (such as fear or cold) for her to be doing this. Many dogs who have back pain due to a herniated disc or other problem act very much like this, so this would be my first suspicion based on your description. She could also be uncomfortable due to abdominal pain, or some other injury that is not visible from the outside. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam today if possible - he/she can do x-rays or other testing if needed to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

Must be very worried. By what you describe I start thinking about the possibility of a back problem such as a slipped disk, or perhaps something going on in her brain such as encephalitis. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. After a thorough physical examination they should have more of an idea about what may be wrong and some recommendations for you. Best of luck and I hope you are able to get her more comfortable soon! The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!

My dog is hunching back, walking slow, and shaking. What's wrong?

May sounds quite uncomfortable! A hunched back stance and trembling can often occur with some back conditions, such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), discospondylitis or fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE). May should be examined by her vet and assessed for the presence of neurological deficits as well as the location of the pain, as this will help to guide her treatment. Until you are able to take May to her vet, keep her confined to a very small room with no furniture or to a crate. She should not be running, jumping, or playing because this could exacerbate any back condition or injury. Do not give her any medication - there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs.

Why is my dog yelping, shivering, and in pain when moving or jumping?

It could be abdominal pain as well as spinal pain. Sometimes spinal disease can have vague symptoms such as shivering or shaking. I would recommend that you have her checked over as there are some medications that will ease the pain immediately but it is essential to distinguish wether the symptoms described are related to a muscular condition,to osteoarthritis or to something more serious like an herniated disc in her spine. This last case is the worst scenario as it can worsen very quickly and determine paralysis. I hope you can have Ebby checked over ASAP and that it is nothing too serious.

Why is my dog shaking, panting excessively, and whining in pain?

It sounds like she should be examined by a vet to determine the source of her pain. She could have neck or back pain, arthritis, abdominal pain, etc. and your vet should be able to localize the pain and decide the best way to treat. She may need an anti-inflammatory and your vet can prescribe. Do not use any human OTC pain relievers as they can be toxic to dogs.

Poor Ace! It sounds like he needs to see the veterinarian today. The shaking may be related to a fever or pain. When pets exhibit back pain, it can be from a compressed disc, a slipped disc, discospondlylitis (an infection), a broken vertebrae, a tumor or an infection within the spinal canal. All of these conditions can result in severe pain and they all require treatment. Your veterinarian will need an x-ray to look at the spine. They can also provide medications to make Ace feel better. That sounds like Toby may be in pain or feeling uncomfortable in the hind end or back, especially if he is shaking, seems in distress, and is abruptly sitting or having trouble walking normally. It's a good idea to bring him into your vet for an exam and to have the back checked as back issues are very common in "long" breeds such as Dachshunds. Your vet can help check for any pain, inflammation, swelling, or arthritis that could be potential causes.
